Lowland Gorillas in Europe 2016

Also, I assume that given being integrated into a new group of young females he will more quickly evolve into a full silverback male (perhaps in a shorter timeframe than we would otherwise expect).

That is true also- at least its very likely.

The Djanghou group at Howletts was created simply by placing the nine year old Djanghou- then a spindly undeveloped animal, with several females younger than him. They simply grew up as a 'youth group' with no friction and then started breeding as they matured. Other groups in Europe, e.g. Apenheul's, were originally formed in the same way and the AF forms new groups in Africa this way too.. It does represent another, though rather unnatural, way of forming a new group. But lots of things with Gorillas in captivity e.g. male groups, aren't natural anyway...;)

Kiki at Antwerp has passed away unfortunately.

Also, what will become of the bachelor group currently at Beekse Bergen? Will they stay?

I know that a small group of chimps recently moved to Dierenrijk, so maybe they will be moved into their former residence?

SafariPark BeekesBergen .

The park have announced their new group will initially comprise male Komale(from Bristol) and female Tuena( from Rotterdam). Then additional females Gyasi(from Apenheul) and N'Washi (from Burgers) will be added also.

Visited Safaripark Beekse Bergen today and saw the first 2 animals of the new to form breeding-group :
male Komale - 9 years old from Bristol Zoo
female Tuena - 7 years old from Rotterdam Zoo
They were already together in the indoor enclosure, the enclosure directly near the entrance. On the left side there is still one of the Chimp-groups and the 2 Gorilla's ( 2 other females will join them in the near future ) in the right-hand enclosure.
Will up-load some photos soon in the Safaripark Beekse Bergen Gallery.

The 2 females yet to come in are Gyasi (Apenheul) and N'washi (Arnhem).

Any idea which chimp group has gone elsewhere into the park?

Are we sure it's Gyasi? I know the press announcement said so, but it would make more sense to be M'Fugaji surely, particularly as Gyasi still has her daughter Tayari at the zoo?

You aren't the first to raise that query( well, you are on here;) ) but no-one knows the answer so far.

It may have been raised and all, but the official press release statement from Safaripark BB has been out for 2 weeks now and it is clearly communicated there (albeit that Gyasi and N'washi will arrive a little tater.

The press release does say that. Apparently Gyasi was chosen as she and her sister present a united front against the Apenheul group leader. But its not set in stone(yet) and may still be reconsidered so the outcome proves different.

Then what's going to happen to Tayari? Will she move with Gyasi?

The group of 7 animals which used to live in the now-gorilla enclosure - near te entrance on the right-hand side has moved to another zoo - Dierenrijk in Nuenen.

Howletts/port Lympne update.

I visited both Parks the other day. Some comments on the Gorillas;

Howletts.

1. I noticed how the oldest females in the groups are disappearing now- Mushie, Tebe, Dihi, Sidonie are among the few that remain, and last but not least, 'Baby Doll,' now the last remaining of the four females of the first breeding group and their oldest Gorilla. She is 55 but still quite spritely and lives alone in the oldest cages.

2. A new male will be sourced to replace (the failed) Matadi as leader of a new fourth group. The females that were to be in his group are alone in the enclosure adjacent to Djanghou's group, in the old Gorilla area.

3. At 13, Ebeki, the newest silverback is not quite fully developed yet. He is very similar to his father Kifu in the adjacent group.

Port Lympne

The Kouillou group from Howletts now lives in Palace of the Apes. It has 12 members, including the latest baby. I only saw two of the bachelor males- it is more difficult to view them there nowadays as the round pavilion containing the oldest males is now closed off to the public, while the Gorilla talk and feed which draws them outside at a set time has moved to the breeding group in the 'Palace' building.

? ??? ??????? ??????????!

"The girl was born on 22 July. She, along with her mother Kira, lives in a group with other gorillas. Kira is already an experienced mother - she is 21 years old and this is her third offspring. Her eldest son [Viking] is now living in Warsaw, and the youngest, 3-year-old Ben [Kwabena], is with us. Ben and the rest of the group do not bother Kira, the baby sits all the time on her mom. Kira is a very caring and responsible mother.
In total we now have 7 gorillas: one male, three females and three youngsters. All of them can be seen at the exhibition."

Apenheul confirmed to ShonenJake 13 that the SBB Press release about this was premature, at least in relation to Apenheul, and discussions about which female(s) from there will join the SBB group are still in process.
