A silly question maybe, but why are so many gorillas given names beginning with 'K'? Perhaps it's just me noticing them more. For a while there were 4 at Paignton - Kumbuka, Kivu, Kiondo and Kiri - making it more of a struggle to ID them somehow.

I’m not familiar with the relationships of those gorillas to comment on them specifically but both Taronga and Melbourne Zoo have a tradition of naming gorilla infants with names that start with same letter as their mother’s name. For example in Kibabu’s troop at Taronga Zoo: Mouila was the mother of Mbeli and Mahali; Kriba was the mother of Kimya and Kipenzi; Frala was the mother of Fataki and Fuzu.

I believe the tradition was inspired by the studies on chimpanzee by Jane Goodall, who named her subjects using this convention. It’s primary function would have been to help remember the animal’s genetic lineage or relationships in the group; but may have had additional benefits in the days before online databases, where zoo’s records of animals were kept on cards and alphabetised.

Young male Indigo from Jersey will go to Paira Daiza on 23rd March, where he will be joined by Tebogo from Dublin, it is intended these two will then join older male Lomako who has been alone since his companion Sango was moved to Berlin Zoo due to fighting between them.

How is BauBau at Apenheul doing as the new groupleader?

Is all settled there?

Kafi (Dublin Zoo) gave birth on April 1st a baby sired by Bangui, the first offspring for both.
