Lowland Gorillas in Europe 2022

Female Milele (aged 10) has moved from Stuttgart to Scmiding, Austria, to join single male Awembe, the last bachelor male at the zoo. Two more females are expected, but not named.

A 2nd female has arrived at Schmiding, this one is Gaika, from Madrid.

Kiburi comes from a well descended line - going back through his father, Buzandi, he's descended from the well known Jambo too who sired many many offspring. Nonetheless, hopefully he'll prove a successful breeding male at London with their females.

He is also related very distantly to females Mjuku and therefore her daughter also. Mjuku's great grandfather was also Jambo. But its a very distant connection.

Kiburis mother Kathi however is wildborn and has not that many breeding offspring. And his paternal grandmother (Buzandis mother) is also not well-represented. Considering that hardly any gorillas exist that are not at least from one well-represented line (be it Jambo/Jersey, Jambo/Apenheul, Ernst/Rotterdam, Matze/Frankfurt, Massa/Krefeld, or the Howletts silverbacks…), he is a pretty good choice.

In the past, the EEP made the mistake to pair wildborn gorillas almost always with a partner from a well-represented line, and therefore, today there are hardly any gorillas not related to those silverbacks I mentioned earlier….

Yes, he was one of only Betsy’s two surviving offspring; he has a full sister at Jersey, but she only has one offspring herself there.

So if you discount Kiburi’s Jersey lineage, he is a pretty valuable male.

As Yassa mentioned, although there are nowadays many surplus males to choose from in Europe, most of them come from several genetic lines that are now well represented. It is increasingly difficult to find any replacement males that are not from one of these lines. The new male in Prague, Kisumu, is a case in point, and so is Kiburi rather.

Belfast - female, Kibibi has left to join the new group at Schmiding. Photos on social media show that she and the other two females are already mixed with silverback, Awembe.

Its an interesting group- 22 year old male and three young females, two aged 8 and one 10. I imagine it was one of the easiest of introductions due to the females being so young with no inherent dominance issues.

Also noteworthy that formation of no less than three new male/female groups has taken place within the last few weeks, at Schmiding, Prague and London.
