Lowland Gorillas in Europe 2022

Loro Parc's oldest male Schorsh has died aged 50. Born at Nurnberg (parents Fritz x Liane), he had lived at Loro Parc for 27 years. Latterly he became blind and for several years before his death, he was segregated from the other males and lived behind the scenes.

What kind of bacterium?

It's just been stated she died after contracting a bacterial infection.

Hopefully her one year old son, Kiango, is doing well. Apparently his father, Bao Bao, is currently caring for him; although Kiango is at the age now where he's not fully dependant on his mother.

Thanks Jambo.
Any knowledge where in the body that infection took place?

No, sorry. All I know is that she had a bacterial infection. Zoos don't normally give us all the information; eg. what kind of infection it was.

Thanks a lot.
When Bongo passed away some details were given. When Tembo and some members of the gang passed away some details were given. When at Blijdorp some of their beautiful primates passed away the reason was made publically.
Thanks a lot.

Are there any imminent plans for a Male Gorilla to move to London Zoo? The Zoo have been without a Silverback for 8 years. Not only is this unnatural for the Gorilla Family but London are wasting perfectly suited breeding females. I understand that too start with Alika and Gernot were too young to be introduced to an unrelated Male. Now their 8 they is no reason why a male cannot arrive. In fact Gernot could now leave London Zoo to head his own Family. In my opinion the sooner a Silverback arrives to breed with Effie,Majukuu and Alika the better.

I'm assuming they won't be getting one until Alika and Gernot are a little older. Both are currently seven, so i'd say maybe in three or four years time, once Gernot can be safely placed into another troop (either bachelor or breeding).

Kumbuka died less than three years ago...

They're seven, not eight. It'll be much more beneficial for the troop and Gernot himself; for Gernot to be removed prior to the introduction of a silverback. Gernot's too young at this point to be silverback. He's not even a blackback yet.

In my opinion the sooner a Silverback arrives to breed with Effie,Majukuu and Alika the better.

London can afford to wait for a few more years. Effie and Mjukkee could easily conceive again despite both females getting into their 30's now.

London could easily add a younger blackback male of similar or slightly older age to the two youngsters if they still don't want to 'risk' a new silverback. I don't normally advocate that but its one way they could resume breeding if they wanted to without the hassle of introducing a new adult male. I'm surprised they haven't already added one though, given the 'draw' factor they have for visitors and to make the group more complete again.

Female Milele (aged 10) has moved from Stuttgart to Scmiding, Austria, to join single male Awembe, the last bachelor male at the zoo. Two more females are expected, but not named.

From the London thread, it appears Kiburi (2004) from Loro Parque will be London's new silverback. He was born at Hannover to Buzandi and Kathrin; and is the half brother of London's former silverback Yeboah.

Kiburi comes from a well descended line - going back through his father, Buzandi, he's descended from the well known Jambo too who sired many many offspring. Nonetheless, hopefully he'll prove a successful breeding male at London with their females.

He also has two full sisters already living in the UK- Kala at Bristol( currently closed of course) and Mali in a Howletts group.
