Lowland Gorillas in Europe 2023

At Apenheul this rearrangement will no doubt be taking into account the young neutered male Jabari who was disruptive in the group with elderly BaoBao and has since had to be seperated, with one female Chama for company. This is not a desirable situation but with a new young/powerful silverback in charge it may be possible to reintegrate them back into a single group again, with a second group then comprising BaoBao and one or more companions.(the two old females Mandji & Mintha?)
Apenheul has mentioned that at least Nemsi and Kiango will remain in Bao Bao's group. Jabari and Chama will join one of the two groups. In which I assume Jabari will indeed join the group with Banjoko.

I think this is a good way for them to go. BaoBao evidently isn't going to father any more babies and he's old and gentle so not really a 'leader'. I think splitting the group in this way should benefit all of them.

Only Bongo, Jambo and BaoBao have headed the main group in Apenhuel. Kibabu was the leader of a second group they formed and then later sent to Sydney, Australia. Balu was the older of the first two males but Bongo was the first to breed. Balu was later sent to La Palmyre in France. The other males mentioned never lived with a full group afaik.
Thanks Pertinax.
Seeing a new troop leader taking up its role.

Yes it was plan to send Bokito to Shanghai and Dango would have been the silverback in Rotterdam. Sadly in the end our Dango moved far away to Shanghai. :(

Yes its true. Original plan was for Bokito, Astra and Quenta to go to Shanghai. There was a big row about Bokito going though, many visitors to his previous home. Berlin, campaigned against the decision to send Bokito in particular. There was also some opposition to the group/trio being sent to China at all. In the end they sent another male -Dango, instead. (Bokito was not sent to China at all.)

Gorilla female N'Gambe will move from Zoo Heidelberg to Zoo Frankfurt this week. N'Gambe and the other female Sheila already did not have a close relationship, but tensions between them increased after ZsaZsa's death. In consultation with the EEP, it was decided to place N'Gambe in another group. A new female will come to Heidelberg early next year.

New silverback Banjoko has arrived in Apenheul. Although the news has only been released now, it seems he may have arrived some days ago and has even already met his new group, though the translation creates some confusion over this. Further reorganisation of the two groups will take place and as the park doesn't reopen till March, Banjoko won't be on show till then.

Good to hear.
The transport through Europe (France, Belgium, The Netherlands) seems to have been done by a non-EU company. How could that have been organized, in that new setting of interest, and shared responsibilities?

** Just to add to this- at present, with the arrival of Banjoko they will initially have three groups- 1. Banjoko and his main group, 2. BaoBao + his two year old son Kiango + female Nemsi and 3. castrated male Jabari+ female Chama. As there is only one other smaller island - which they have been using, I believe Jabari and Chama will have to be integrated into the main group before BaoBao & co can then use the other (smaller) island and adjacent indoor dens.

They want Chama and Jabari to join the group of Banjoko. BaoBao will live in the smaller island with Nemsi and Kiango.

And how is the situation today (13th of dec) in the different gorillas groups?
How are they housed, acces towards an outdoor, who is with who?
Does Banjoko feels relaxed?

According to the Facebook post, Banjoko has now already met the gorillas from his new group. Some other things from the video and comments under the Facebook post:

Nemsi and Kiango are staying with Bao Bao for now. Jabari is now in the group with Banjoko. How the other animals are divided between the groups has not yet been announced. The composition of both groups will be monitored closely in the coming period to determine whether it remains that way.

In the indoor enclosure, extra dividing walls have been made and some windows have been blinded so that Bao Bao and Banjoko cannot see each other.

I am pretty certain they will plan that Banjoko's group contains all the females except Nemsi- unless there is any problem with any of them settling with him. The 2nd island is small and they will want the main group to look a decent size for display on the main island- though it will still only be around six(?) individuals.

I'd like to know what date/day Banjoko actually arrived in Apenheul.

I didn't see any reference to Jabari where I looked on their Facebook page.

Yes I think so too.

I don't know. But in the video, I saw some snow, and we had some snow in late November/early December.

I didn't see any reference to Jabari where I looked on their Facebook page.
Apenheul mentioned it in the comments of the Facebook post of Banjoko's arrival after someone asked where Jabari was.

Maybe, they can add an unrelated female in a later stage of building Banjoko's group.
