On 2 January, female Duni gave birth to her first young at Zoo Praha. Mother and young, whose gender is not yet known, are doing well. This is also the first young for father Kisumu. In about three months, another young is expected to be born to female Kijivu.

How is young silverback Banjoko doing at The Apenheul in The Netherlands? With whom is he sharing his new group? And how are the animals interacting?

Some more news??

Apenheul has not yet given any new updates on Banjoko and his group since his arrival.

As its closed till Spring I guess they don't feel any need to give updates until it opens again. By then they should have completed the new mixes- i.e. Banjoko heading main group, and BaoBao seperate with Nemsi & Kiango. The website Gorillasland already has them in these combinations but whether they are actually completed yet I don't know.

Apenheul has provided an update on how new silverback Banjoko is now doing.

The morning after Banjoko's arrival, the gorillas were able to get to know each other through two adjacent enclosures. One female, Chama, showed a lot of interest. So she was introduced to Banjoko first. Things soon went very well between the two. In the afternoon, female Mfugaji was introduced. She took a bit longer to get used to the situation, but at the end of the day it was a successful introduction.

The next day, male Jabari was added to Banjoko's group. He too was soon comfortable in the group. With that, the group was complete. When the weather gets nice, the next step is to go outside. So Banjoko can explore the island together with his group.

BaoBao and his group are on the other side of the building, where they have their own island. The new situation does not cause unrest in both BaoBao's group and Banjoko's group.

No mention of the two old females, Mintha and Mandji. My guess is they may be added to Banjoko's new group when they can all go outside where there is more space. Otherwise they will end up with three seperate groups..

Maybe for some comfort the old ladies stay in their group of BaoBao.
Gives some possibilities.

Yes, I guess that's it. I had thought for reasons of space they would join Banjoko's group as the other (BaoBao's) island is a lot smaller I know. But seems their gorillas have been split a different way.

Well. The two old ladies doesnot take that much space. As BaoBao doesnot.
Nemsi and Kiango does not some space. But more than space they need a playmate or playmates (Kiango) and some next generation (Nemsi). But both scenarios will not be provided in the time being. Instead something different is happening.
Banjoko has to work on his and his band future. Although a small band at the moment, possibly that will change in the near future. Maybe a young female to be added? In some years time?

The old females will not be very active anymore so yes, space perhaps not an issue and they will be happier with the older male. Banjoko's group on the main island will be just 4 gorillas for now. Another young female would indeed help fill his group a bit more.

London Zoo; Effie has had a baby, just a couple of weeks after Mjukuu. I hope she is more protective than previously or initially that they take steps to prevent Mjukuu taking it over like last time- trying to rear two at the same time('twins') is a heavy burden for a female while the babies are put in a competing situation too..

Sadly Shumba died today in Howletts Animal Park. She had brain tumour. She was the foster mother of Yaounde and Kumbi.
