Lowland Gorillas in Europe 2025

That's usually the case once a silverback passes - however it can at times present issues amongst the girls who tend to fight and bicker more often without the presence of a silverback. In a normal functioning troop, the silverback is the one who will maintain order within the group.

As @Pertinax said, Kibo's still young so they'll likely have to wait another few years until they're confident he won't be at risk during introductions.

Also, where a female takes over the position, it doesn't mean there isn't any stress in the group either. A female doesn't hold this position by choice and it's more as an interim until a new male arrives. She, as well as the others, may herself be stressed/unhappy by the absence of a male. But with a youngster in the group there is little they can do. I would say four years old might be the lowest threshold for bringing in a strange male though some places wait a lot longer. What they have to weigh up is the risk to the youngster against the continued well-being of the male-less group.

thanks. besides that, that youngster is a young male. and growing coming years in male-hood

He doesn't live in Europe anymore but Shanghai Zoo in China have reported their male 33 year old Dango has died. He was born in Budapest. There was some controversy when he and two females Astra and Quenta were exported to China in 2007. He had two male offspring with Astra who still live in Shanghai(as do the females).

Male, Kio (7), Zoo Leipzig, did not awake after a check-up for intestinal problems.
After Kio's death last week, 21-year-old Kibara also passed away today. She started showing the same disease symptoms, such as exhaustion and loss of appetite. Like Kio, treatment did not work and she too died during anaesthesia.

The investigations into Kio's cause of death have not yet been completed, so no concrete results are available yet. The gorilla group is currently under strict medical supervision.

Very unfortunate news to hear - hopefully the other four gorillas will all remain safe.

The loss of Kibara is especially tragic in that it reduces Leipzig to just one breeding female (Kumili).

I don't think they will have issues getting another breeding female. The tragedy is that they need to find out about the reason why it happened. Until they do every other gorilla is at risk.

Sad news, Zurich Zoo's 47-year-old silverback male N'Golo has passed away.
Beloved Zurich Zoo gorilla euthanized after years of declining health.
Sad news to hear; he was an incredibly successful silverback, survived by his many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren represented all across Europe.

He also had an impressive tenure at Zurich - residing there as the silverback for the last 41 years!

Hopefully his youngest daughters, Haiba (2007) and Mahiri (2013) will now get the opportunity to breed once a silverback arrives.

Mahiri arrived in Wuppertal this week. She is in a non breeding group - you name the reason: N'Golo has many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren over Europe, so his genes are over-represented.

Thanks for that. The silverback there (Vimoto) is her half brother; also Zurich born and son of N'Golo - so it seems Wuppertal is a non breeding group for the foreseeable now.

Bwana moved from Warsaw to Zurich on 7th April

Sosto - females, Makena and Akiba arrived from Barcelona in March. They are mother and daughter
Great news for Sosto especially - in that Djumbah finally has companionship. Both females are quite valuable.

Is there any news on Mbini at Barcelona who should also moving soon (if she hasn’t eventually)?
