Lowland gorillas in Europe

I think the problem in Cologne was/is that the silverback Kim is very "picky" about the females. He likes two (Gina and N`Datwa) and breeds with them but pretty much ignores the other two (Kibi and Ulca). Thankfully Ulca has been moved now. The zoo should do the same with Kibi as soon as possible since she is wild born and has never bred, she is 30 now and maybe she could have a baby if she were moved to another group.

Yassa,

Perhaps wild born Kibi could be sent to Hannover (proven male, 3 offspring 2004-2006) or Apenheul (new male Jambo has impregnated 2 females already).

Can you give me some more info on gorilla breeding at Koeln:

Any young born lately over there?
Which gorillas are currently at Koeln?

She'd be best off going to a small group with a breeding silverback but only a very small number of females. Easier to integrate a strange/older female that way...

New holding for lowland gorillas in Spain

The Parque de la naturaleza Cabarceno near Santander has acquired a pair of lowland gorillas for a new great ape display. The male Niky and female Nadia arrived on 30/4/2007 from Madrid Zoo and are the vanguard of a new larger troupe of lowland gorillas.

The Parque de la naturaleza Cabarceno is primarily known in zoological circles for its breeding of African elephants in natural surroundings. Species exhibitted are giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, addax and Somali wild ass. It is a large drive thru reserve in forested and mountainous territory.

Someone has any historical information on gorillas Niky and Nadia. I suspect they are the former couple at Madrid Zoo and that Madrid Zoo now has a new young group of gorillas as replacements.

grantsmb?

Madrid Zoo until recently had 2.2 Gorillas;
m Niky wilborn ca 1980.
f. Nadia wildborn ca 1987
m. Malobo. captiveborn Madrid 1991.(Bioko x Nadia- handreared)
f. Banga. captive born Madrid 1991.Bioko x Muni- handreared)

Now from these they have only the male Malobo around who a new trio is being formed. The two new females are Gorka, born in Budapest, and (soon) Coco, a wilborn female from Barcelona. Gorka and Malobo already bred together but the baby died early on. Banga,(who suffers from Alopecia and is bald) is to go to the Givskud group in Denmark. I don't know what other animals will join the pair at Carbarceno.

The Edinburgh(via Twycross) pair SamSam and Yinka were headed for Carbarceno but that changed after Yinka died and new plans were made.

Duisburg Zoo will shortly sent the elder gorilla pair Catou (silverback) and Dorle (elderly female) to Valencia Bioparc.

A young male will then be added to the current group of ultra youngsters Vizuri, Momo and Safiri to start up a breeding group. Grantsmb said it would be Mapema (ex Paignton), if am I correct ....!

Anyhow, the move is scheduled very soonish. :)

Yep. Mapema is still at Paignton at present. I'm trying to find out when he goes....

Gigit says Mapema is due to leave Paignton on October 3oth. I imagine Catou and Dorle will leave Duisburg before he arrives...

Hot off the press. At Apenheul Zoo the first gorilla sired by Jambo has been born today! :D

More info to follow later.

For the interested, the gorilla-swap at Duisburg is completed. Catou and Dorle have left and the day before yesterday Mapema arrived from Paignton to acompany Vizuri, Momo and Safiri.

Yep, I'm glad that Mapema has arrived safely- with the recent death of his younger sister Ya Pili at Jersey, he's currently the only 2nd generation rep. of the Rigo/Ya Kwanza line- so an important male.. Can you can update us on when they're mixed and if mating happens?

Its quite possible Mapema could breed before either his father(at Jersey) or grandfather (at Melbourne) have any more offspring..

Hello again,

Rest assured we will keep a look out for any news of his introduction to his new flock of girls! :D

My prediction is that (providing he's interested) he will mate with Vizuri and Safiri. 'Momo' is already 25 with no breeding so he may not 'like' her...;) but of course I hope I'm wrong there too. He certainly needs to breed.

If Mapema is only half the gorilla man as he is supposed to be (being a well socialised gorilla pre-silverback), he will even have Momo drooling over him in no time.

Catou and Kumba were not exactly theatre fun material ... if you get my drift. And that is sarcasm beyond relief! Shame about the valuable genes both had, and shame about their social skills in general.

NOw here is an interesting parallel....

At Beauval Zoo you'll see 'Asato' has recently sired a 2nd infant and apparently a third female is pregnant. He too came from the Paignton batchelor group and was mating a a female at Beauval within one hour :) of the first introductions. THAT is how a good male should act!

Asato and Mapema have almost identical history- Asato is Mapema's uncle.(Asato/Kahili= brother & sister) Both were mother-reared at Jersey, and both left Jersey for the Paignton batchelor group at a similar ages(about 7) So you can see why I am confident about Mapema.

Yeah, its sad about Catou and Kumba. My guess is they both left the wild at too young an age to learn proper social skills for breeding. I'm still not sure about female Momo though- she lived at Edinburgh Zoo a long while- not a very normal female I think. Still, who knows?

On the older ones: I think it would have been very much different if both had been in integrated family groups or even in a bachelor group setting when they first came to a captive environment. But that is of course talking in hind sight .... (if we had known in the early 1970's, things would have been rather different with all these older non-represented males and females in captivity).

Yes. Its not surprising some of those earlier animals never bred- having grown up in very humanised situations, they couldn't fully adapt to group life (as far as breeding)when it was offered to them. Catou I always think is a rather sad looking gorilla:( Each gorilla is different to the next. Chessington's original pair Kumba and Baffia are exactly the same age as 'Catou'(1969) and were imported as very small babies. Yet Kumba(but not Baffia) became a good breeder when he was given other females in his adulthood.

I REALLY do hope that some efforts will be geared to secure and freeze sperm and ovae from the older non-represented gorillas for future use. It is imperative that resources be invested into developping artificial breeding techniques for the gorilla. Damn, it is an increasingly endangered taxon and with every genetically valuable individual gone, another part of the puzzle breaks down!
