Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park Lowry Park Zoo News 2013

4 female Orinoco Crocodiles are now on exhibit outside of the ZooVentures Theater.

Excellent - the more Florida zoos have Orinocos on display the better for me come October - they're my no. 1 reptile target for the year!

(and as it stands I've got three chances!)

I wish I got down to see Lowry Park this year, but it just didn't fit with my schedule. Oh well, have fun when you're in Florida, Maguari!

Thanks - I'm sure I will!

Got my ESTA approval today so I'm now officially entitled to attempt to enter the country. :D

(not to mention $14 less well-off!)

I'm particularly looking forward to Lowry Park - it has a very high rate of new species for me for its size - some all-round rarities, some things that are around in the US but absent from Europe.

Lowry Babies

My Facebook friend,Brenda works at the zoo. She told me that they have a baby rhino, baby Okapi, and baby elephant.

We know, all these births happened quite some time ago and were already reported.;)

There's also a baby Pygmy Hippo.

Welcome to ZooChat, by the way!:)

Another zoo baby, thought not quite as big! This is from the zoo's Facebook:
"Birds of a feather don't always flock together! Two female Florida sandhill cranes have adopted the chick of a Eurasian Demoiselle crane. This fostering technique is used to help build populations or when parent birds lack experience."

I remember when the Bronx Zoo had a holstein cow mate with a gaur and she gave birth to the gaur

That's not possible. I Domestic Cow has given birth to a Gaur through cloning but not at the Bronx Zoo. If Bronx did breed a Gaur and a Domestic Cow (and I doubt the would) then it'd be a hybrid.

That article describes an embryo transfer - a Gaur embryo was transferred into the cow. The cow didn't mate with the Gaur - as Thylo said, that wouldn't result in a Gaur calf but a hybrid.

Goyoung, a male Bornean Orangutan, is now at the zoo from Pittsburgh, and is slowly adjusting to his new habitat and fellow orangutans. I got this news from TigerValley98 on the Pittsburgh Zoo news thread, and Lowry Park's Facebook.
All cars need to utilize the North Boulevard entrance to the zoo thanks to heavy downpours creating a water main break in front of the zoo's main entrance.

I visited the zoo yesterday and enjoyed myself very much. The Florida Boardwalk, Sulawesi Aviary, and walk-through aviary were easily the best exhibits for me (even if the manatee tank was empty:p) with Safari Africa (including the Safari ride), Lorikeet Landing, and Wallaroo Station coming in second and Asian Gardens and Primate World tying for last (though I did like individual enclosures and some of the species were very nice). I was disappointed, though, by the fact that I didn't even see a sign nor enclosure for the zoo's two kudu species, Black Duiker (I only saw the two Bay Duikers myself and none of the other of the four duikers listed), and the Gerenuk (where are they suppose o be!?). The safari ride was alright but the wait is a bit long even if the line I short as they only have one truck. You see Patas Monkeys, Bontebok, Common Eland, Waterbuck, Martial Eagle, Aldabra Giant Tortoise, and African Spurred Tortoise (I think), and Marabou Stork all almost right away and then you spend the rest of the around twenty minutes viewing holding pens and the back ends of enclosures you can better see from the pathway but the Thompson's Gazelle and kudu never made an appearance. I did manage to see the baby Okapi, Lowland Nyala, Pygmy Hippopotamus, Indian Rhinoceros, and even a very young Southern White Rhinoceros but never saw the elephant calf nor its mother. And since when does the zoo have warthog? The map lists them as being across the path from the nyala/duiker/ground hornbill enclosure but there's nothing there! Are they suppose to be in the neighboring enclosure which was closed.

By the way, the Shoebills are now in the large aviary with the pelicans, storks, and flamingos.

Photos up as soon as possible!

It's somewhat disappointing that there are no manatees in the zoo's pool, but at the same time a very good thing since they're now in the wild again!
Gerenuk left the zoo's collection a while ago.
A new White Rhinoceros calf? The zoo didn't announce this. Thanks for noting that!
The Warthog are located in the neighboring enclosure.
Did you see the new male orangutan?
According to Facebook, Zola the Pygmy Hippopotamus is now 8 months old, and Mpumi the African Elephant is now 7 months old. Bahati the Okapi will turn 7 months old on August 6th. The Indian Rhino calf should turn 3 months old on August 10th, or around that time. The female African Penguin chick was named Tapanga, which means sweet. And all 3 Pygmy Hippos (mother, father, and calf) are on exhibit together.

Well I did see a small one that quickly swam into the back area but besides that the pool was empty, even of fish!
Well it's good to know that I at least didn't miss them.
I don't know how young it is but I took a pic. It's not the best view, though, since I could only see the calf when on the safari ride which was moving so it was hard to get a pic.
I saw several orangutans including a large male. I didn't see the langurs though.
The Okapi the safari ride woman called the calf looked like an adult so I'm not sure if I really saw it.
I did also see the penguin chick.
I only saw the mother and calf when I went. There was also a goose in the enclosure.

By the way, they were working on a new large tank in the manatee building.
