The Lubee Bat Conservancy has a newly updated website with much information about their bat conservation center in Gainesville, FL.

Including a bit of history...

Lubee Bat Conservancy (formerly called The Lubee Foundation, Inc.) was founded as a non-profit (501-c-3) organization in 1989 by the late Luis F. Bacardi, a Bacardi rum family member with a strong passion for endangered wildlife and a particular fondness of bats. The name "Lubee" is derived from Luis F. Bacardi’s name. Luis Bacardi devoted his life to the preservation of endangered species, and played a key role in ensuring a future for flying foxes throughout the Pacific. In 1990, Lubee’s support of a landmark conference held in the Pacific Islands resulted in the Pacific Island Flying Fox Declaration, which pledges to safeguard against the over-exploitation of flying foxes and against the loss of the rain forests upon which flying foxes depend and maintain. Luis Bacardi's dream of helping wild animals overlooked by others continues through his legacy, Lubee.

The facility has added two native species of bats to its collection: two evening bats and one southeastern myotis. They are all rescue animals.

10.0 Straw-coloured Fruit Bats have arrived from Bronx Zoo:

"We’ve got some exciting news! We recently welcomed ten male African straw-colored fruit bats to our facility! They will reside here on permanent loan from the Bronx Zoo. They have been enjoying all of the room and fresh browse in their spacious new outdoor enclosure and although shy, they seem to be adjusting well! They spend the day huddled closely together in their little colony, dispersing and chattering excitedly at the site of food.

African straw-colored fruit bats occupy a broad range of habitats in sub-Saharan Africa. They are the main seed dispersers for the important African teak tree, and pollinate and disperse a broad range of other plant species like mango, pawpaw, figs, passion fruit, and loquats."
