Zoo Aquarium de Madrid Madrid zoo news

To add a bit on the dolphin situation, when I talked to the keepers they told me that tho the zoo is going to wait to see if they will need to house a pod of dolphins, that they're already looking for a replacement, and it's likely to be a pinniped that the zoo doesn't have. My best bet is the steller sea lions, but I didn' asked them as they weren't the ones in charge of it.

Couple of notes from the visit:
  • It's seems that a new otter, named Sparrow, has joined the only otter that the zoo has, Verano.
I called the otter Sparrow as that what I heard the keepr call the otter, but I've learnt that his name is Tupparo (hence the confusion) and that he came from AquaZoo.

Couple of notes from the visit:
  • Malabo, the male gorilla, has died. The zoo isn't going to try to acquire a bachellor from the fear of him not wanting to accept the son of Malabo, Kibo.

When did the new giant otter arrive? I saw two individuals in my visit back in January.
The 14-year-old giant otter male Tuparro arrived from AquaZoo Leeuwarden in October last year.

Woow I really hope it is steller sea lions but I don't want to get too excited about it :p

Marineland Antibes dolphins should be transfer by next month if everything goes fine, they say they are expecting them to stay in Madrid for one year aprox before their final destination in Loro Parque, I don't really understand what's the point of this, does anyone know? Why not transfer them directly to Loro Parque? The only thing I can think is they still belong to Parques Reunidos so they would not send them to Loro Parque until they finish all the paper work or something like that, I would imagine they are only transferring the orcas because Parques Reunidos doesn't have any other facility to keep them so they agree on sending them directly to Tenerife

Does anyone know how many South American sea lions Zoo Madrid has? And perhaps more information (male/female, name, date of birth, etc.)?

Yesterday I had a nice stroll through the zoo and here's my report:
-Aquatic bird area:
  • Not much to point here, just an obervation. I think the zoo is handling quite badly the flamingo feeding. Some guests are quite rude and will enter on the habitat just to feed flamingos caussing a bit of stress. Obviously I reported it to a keeper, but I think this should be fassed out, for the safety of the birds.
-The seas:
  • Seals and penguins weren't doing much, but the sea lion show was fun.
-The farmyard:
  • Also, nothing much to report here. Happy that the geriatric donkey Sabanero is still standing.
-Asia:
  • The elephants were quite noisy and active. They were playing and bathing!
  • A new capuchin baby has joined the group! Couldn't have the sex nor the name confirmed.
  • Red pandas, panda bears, indian rhinos, takins, and sun bears were active.
  • Saw the muntjac and asiatic black bear, which are normally no-shows!
-South America:
  • From the last couple of visits, seems that there has only been one vicuña. Can anyone confirm this? It would be very sad if they had lost the other one.
-Ape zone:
  • Chimps and gibbons were out and about, while the orangutans were inside.
  • Saw the baby mandrill, it was ver fun.
-Africa:
  • Gorillas were also inside.
  • I have a feeling that both the african tortoises and african savanah exhibits are getting emptier.
  • Lemurs were active, but only saw one of the two brown lemurs they have at the zoo.
-Europe:
  • Didn't saw the european mink.
  • The bears, lynxes and wolves were active.
  • The goat exhibit also seems to be getting emptier.
-Ausralasia:
  • The binturoung was active which was a pleasant surprise.
  • The koalas were shut indoors as they usually are.
-Aquarium:
  • It seems that they got a new sandbar shark from Oceanografric Valencia.
-Dolphinarium:
  • Sad to report that there's been no change in the exhibit whatsoever. I know it's not been a year, but I'm starting to worry the zoo is going to do nothing.
-Birds:
  • The show was fun, but nothing new.
  • The hornbill at the far right enclosure seemed to be missing.

Hi @MennoPebesma, I don't have a specific number but I know they have a male sea lion, a female sea lion named Carlota and that they have some geriatric individuals. I'm sure there's more but hope I could help.

I thought they adapted the dolphinarium for sea lions and now some of the patagonian are living there. I have seen some recent videos of it... Did they again empty the enclosure?

I got sent a picture of glass fences being installed in the edge of the pool but had no idea it had already been occupied, that would be good news.

I was told by a worker that I couldn't pass to the exhibit as they were doing some regular maintance, and I supossed that they were filtrating the water. I did hear some familiar roars but I supposed it was the inhabitants of the other sea lion exhibit. I have seen a recent video confirming the exhibit upgrade for the sea lions, so that's confirmed. Sad to see that the zoo hasn't made more promotion for it...
That's a big fummble on my part, sorry , but happy to see that there's new inhabitants :).

Im still hoping they will eventually receive the steller sea lions from Faunia as it would be pretty cool to have the chance to see them underwater (ideally I would add some fake rocks on the pool to give for a nicer view but that is asking too much for Parques Reunidos).... But anyways, having patagonian sea lions there is also a nice thing and a good upgrade for them (considering these are the ones that used to live in that tiny pool behind the dolphinarium?). I also hope if this stays for the patagonian that they would eventually move there the entire sea lion show as the bigger size gives chances for more people to see the show (how many times I have seen people standing up to see the sea lion show!) but also gives options for more water behaviors (although I don't expect the show itself to be very different... Even the dolphin show they were doing in my last visit in 2024 was pretty boring so I guess the park just doesn't really have much interest in improving their presentations)
