A new thread for some news from the zoo.
Last November the zoo received a pair of highly endangered Spanish imperial eagle, the birds have come on loan from a Spanish government breeding centre.
These are the only ones of their kind in a public collection anywhere.

The zoo has also received a pair of yellow footed rock wallaby from Besancon in France.
 
Indian rhino Baatschii

Did female indian rhino Baatschii arrived well at Madrid? Is she ok?
 
Well, I'll respond to my own questions :D
Baatschii arrived well last Friday. She's doing fine and today she was outside the first time. Find a photo taken by Zoo Madrid today at my website on indian rhinos.

Do you take it the exhibit is adequate to hold 3 individual rhinos? Both males need to be separated now since they are nearing maturity and the play-fighting days are over. Mature bulls will nag each other and fight for territory no matter what ...

To my knowledge the Madrid Zoo are still scheduled to phase out its Indian rhinos in the long term? It is said that the Madrid Zoo will provide space for the rhino pair (before relocation to Blackpool Zoo).
 
AFAIK, Sahib was born at Stuttgart on March 21, 2004, son of Bruno and Sani. He was transferred to Madrid on September 20, 2006
 
Effectively, Zoologico de Madrid now holds another potential breeding pair.
Male Sahib (Basel x Nepal) and female Baatschii (SD-Zoo x Basel).

Long term: the exhibit is far from optimum and their future looks unclear. The white rhinos are finally breeding (calf last year), all be it by AI and probably more intended. This exhibit has recently been upgraded (allthough photos on the forum indicate otherwise).
 
Madrid confirmed that they are doing some work on their indian rhino exhibit during the next months.
 
Can any-one give me an update on how orang-utan Pundu is getting on in her new home? Any babies from her yet?

They put away the second pup, but they give it back to the mother from time to time, to make sure, it will survive also.
 
It looks like there has been some form of renovation/remodelling of the Asian elephant habitat. Close by in the old gaur area a large enclosure has been recreated for the Indian rhino (Madrid received a female before long ... remember!).
Anyone has any idea what happened here?
