Baby elephant born on March 2nd 2013 was named Buba.

Po and De De, the two panda cubs born at Madrid in September 2010, will be moved back to China on May 16th 2013.

Alesmos, incidentally this was some 35 years in the making ... so a historic achievement for Madrid Zoo.

There seem to have been quite a number of improvements lately, including the Asian elephant exhibit and the Indian rhino areas.

How are the Malayan tapirs doing now after the recent exchange of individuals to create more compatible pairings?
 
Has anyone been into the Madagascar exhibit(lemurs ring tailed and black ruffed)its very good the encounters are amazing:p:p:p:D:D:D
 
I think right now you can enter to this "walk through " for free, it's true?
 
Orangutans

Can anyone tell me the names of the orangutans at Madrid? I was there last week and saw 3 - the male, a female and an infant - but this doesn't tie in with the most recent studbook I've seen which lists 4, Kedua, Dahi, Surya and Pal :confused:

I've done a bit more research as I vaguely remembered a death at Madrid:

Pal was born on 5 July 2010. Dahi x Pundu
Pundu died on 7 February 2011
Female born/died 22 December 2011. Dahi x Kedua

So, I'm assuming that I saw Kedua holding Pal - did she 'adopt' him after losing her baby? - and that Surya was out of sight somewhere.
 
I managed to escape from a coach tour of Spain and spend a few hours at Madrid zoo a couple of weeks ago. I tried, but failed, to see everything, and was very impressed by the range of species and the appearance of most of the exhibits.

It was particularly exciting to see the Giant Pandas and Koalas - I've not seen these for many years. And I've never seen Yak before. I'm not sure how I feel about Dolphin shows but it was quite spectacular. I'm not a huge reptile fan but I enjoyed the Reptile House apart from the deafening noise of hundreds of people in there. And I loved the free-range storks nesting all over the place and clattering their beaks together.

they would be wild storks wouldn't they? As opposed to free-range?

Nice report. Not sure why you're not sure about how you feel about the dolphin shows. I thought they were VERY good! Even better at the Lisbon Zoo in Portugal.

I got the impression that they are fed at the zoo. However you describe them, they were an amazing sight! We'd seen nests as we sped across Spain in the coach, so it was good to be able to get those close-up views.

I tend to watch these shows with a mixture of unease on behalf of the dolphins and amazement.There is no doubt that this one was spectacular.
 
Storks are very particular / choosy when it comes to nesting sites. Obviously the park is sufficient to their needs and storks tend to nest in colonies ... much against popular expectations. So, entirely natural. Do they get fed in the zoo ... I would not know ... but then I assume they make their own welcome on their terms (not much the zoo can do there). :D
 
0.0.1 Giant Panda born in the early hours of this morning (30th August) the fourth successful birth for Madrid..

.....If Edinburgh can also can have a successful birth this year, then they will make it a hat-trick with the all the European collections holding Panda of breeding age having bred this year (Beauval's are considered too young atm)
 
Yes, please do find out which are the current white rhinos there.
