Zoo Aquarium de Madrid Madrid zoo news

My question is: Do the Sumatran elephants arrive from Tierpark Berlin? Or from wherever?

Hi,

At the beginning of May I will be visiting Madrid Zoo for the first time and would have two questions. Are there still Muellers gibbons and Spanish ibexes and where in the zoo can I find them ? Am I right in saying that the Verraauxs eagle can be seen only during the bird show ?
Any response really appreciated.

Jakub

Hi Jakub. The two answers to your questions are yes. At least during my last visit in 2014.

The giant panda female has been artificially inseminated.

Zoo Aquarium de Madrid has received two Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus). These two individuals are not suitable for reintroduction or to be part of the captive breeding programme. They will now be ambassadors for the species and help educating the public about their threatened status and all the work that is going on to save their species from extinction.
This zoo, together with Zoobotánico Jerez, Selwo Aventura and Lisbon Zoo, are the only zoos in the world with this species in their collection.

The 2 lynx are Jasmin & Kalama.

Fantastic news! :)
I'm glad captive animals are continuing to spread across the Iberian peninsula - hopefully it's just a matter of time before they start to spread across the rest of Europe.

Madrid now holds Asian Lions - Two females made the journey South from Besancon this weekend

It's a female, and it is the first Sumatran elephant born in europe. The zoo got 1.2 -Valentino, Cynthia and Nova, last year from Berlin tierpark. The mother was already pregnant, when she was transported to Madrid.
