Zoologischer Garten Magdeburg Magdeburg Zoo

Just be aware ,that unlike the other animals in our(Euplerid Foundation) breeding programme,the pair at Magdeburg seem to be fairly nocturnal. Elsewhere this isnt quite as much the case(the others are all off public display of course). Last year a Japanese visitor came especially to see them at Magdeburg via special request and was extremely lucky to see the male out and about.
 
I will be visiting in a couple of weeks, and was wondering what the best time of day to see the Marbled Polecat and Grandidier's Vontsira would be? I was also wondering if anybody can confirm ZTL's claims that the zoo houses Green Acouchy, Spix's Moustached Tamarin and Double-spurred Francolin, as I couldn't find any mention of them on the zoo's website, and if so, where in the zoo are they housed? Thanks! :)
 
I didn't see the francolins in september 2021. Their former enclosure was empty and they were no longer signed.
The accouchy was signed, but I did not see them. (they're kept together in the red-bellied tamarin enclosure)
I did see the tamarins, they recently had offspring too. They're in the tamarin section of the park.

I saw a very active polecat at 12.00. It was asleep when I checked earlier at 10.00.

If they are in the same place they were this time last year, the acouchy and tamarin are towards the middle of the park, I chanced upon the acouchy but the tamarin was where the marmosets are indicated on the map. Not sure about the francolin, although there are small aviaries dotted about along the main path.

Vontsira is supposedly most active at night, so luck will be required. The polecat is supposed to be fed between 1 and 2 pm (at least this is what I was told when I enquired last year), so that's when I'll be trying in a few days' time.
 
Please note that the red-bellied tamarins and the acouchy are not where the other tamarins and marmosets are, instead they have an enclose elswhere in the park. If I remember correctly. they're next to the saki walkthrough enclosure.
 
Sadly female South American tapir (Tapirus terrestris) Meta was euthanised recently, she suffered from age related illnesses. Sadly female Mishmi takin (Budorcas taxicolor taxicolor) Miriam passed away unexpectedly, she only arrived at the zoo last month..

In May a Crested caracara (Caracara plancus) was born.

Recently a Michie's tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus michianus) was born.

According to ZTL, the zoo received Galapagos Giant Tortoise, which are currently on display in the Südamerika Haus (I assume this is the Tapir Haus, although I am not sure where there is space in there for them). Of course ZTL isn't always that reliable, but it usually is for German collections, and it cites a visit in August as a source.
 
At the start of this month male Eastern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli) Malte (*2019) was send to Diergaarde Blijdorp.

In July a new species arrived at the zoo, namely Scimitar-horned oryxes (Oryx dammah)! First 2 males arrived from Planète Sauvage and Kultúrpark, recently a third male arrived from Zoo Schmiding. They can be found in the same enclosure at the Zebras and giraffes.

On the 5th of August a Secretary bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) hatched!

The zoo recently posted a video about this on their Instagram, they are indeed kept in the Tapir Haus.

Thanks for sharing. I just can't imagine where there is space. There was an empty, open-topped terrarium near the exit to the building, but if memory serves it is nowhere near big enough for giant tortoises, even given that the individuals shown in the video look quite young. Hopefully they haven't had to reduce the tapir's indoor space to allow for this, and hopefully they have a decent outdoor area as well, which doesn't appear to be shown in the video

The animals in question are indeed very young, and from memory are about the size of a radiated tortoise or a shade smaller - I got photos a few weeks ago, so will see if I can find any decent shots of the enclosure.
