Zoologischer Garten Magdeburg Magdeburg Zoo

According to ZTL, the pair of Spix's Moustached Tamarin (Saguinus mystax) have left for Jihlava Zoo in Czechia. A shame, as they were one of the zoo's greatest rarities, and that leaves just two European zoos (Jihlava and Olomouc, both in Czechia) as holders, although given Jihlava's large group and past breeding success with the species, I am sure that this move was performed with good purpose, and hopefully further breeding will occur of this exciting rarity!

The species is being phased out according to the EAZA's best practice guidelines. So I wouldn't count on any more breeding.

Last month 3-year old male South African elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) Uli was send to Noahs Ark Zoo Farm. In May female Sweni will arrive from Zoo Wuppertal.

Earlier this month the Western black crowned cranes (Balearica pavonina pavonina) got a new aviary next to the zebra enclosure.

Recently a Tanzanian Black-and-white colobus (Colobus angolensis palliatus) was born!

After a visit today it seems that Magdeburg's rarity count has dropped further (at least for the time being) as both the vontsiras and the black-tailed marmosets have been taken offshow, but are still behind the scenes (Confirmed by the keepers I spoke to today)
Not a single onshow Grandidier's Vontsira in Europe then - very grateful to have seen them while I still had the chance, but can't help but wonder what the motive behind this decision was...

Recently a new species was put on display in the Tapirhaus, namely Cranwell's horned frogs (Ceratophrys cranwelli).

A very nice species, although unfortunately (judging by the fact that both the most recent sources on ZTL for the species read nicht gesehen, nicht ausgeschildert), it looks as though they have replaced the Splashback Poison Dart Frogs, which were a delightful lifetick and one of the more interesting dendrobates that I had seen.

Does anyone have an update on this?
When I visted Magdeburg a few years ago, the vontsiras were sadly off-show due to covid. I am planning my 2025 zootrip right now, and might include a revisit to this zoo if they're back on display.
A ZTL entry mentions 'seen and signed' for july 2024, so they might have been moved back onshow after this message was posted..?

I did not see them during my visit in September, nor were they indicated anywhere. I thought they had an enclosure in the lemur enclosure near the elephant enclosure and that is no longer a walk-through enclosure now.
