Zoologischer Garten Magdeburg Magdeburg Zoo

I did not see them during my visit in September, nor were they indicated anywhere. I thought they had an enclosure in the lemur enclosure near the elephant enclosure and that is no longer a walk-through enclosure now.

Yes that's right, that's were they were kept. It was the only part of the zoo still closed due to covid during my visit in 2021.

Too bad they're off-show now. I'll try contacting the zoo to see if anything if possible.
If not, I might consider the revisit. It's a really great zoo, but there are still many zoos in the area I haven't visited yet that I might prioritize. The black-tailed marmosets being off-show is also a downer.

The vontsiras belong to me...the male recently died and we are trying to bring the female back(post- Brexit paperwork) to be part of the UK breeding programme.

I'm sorry to hear about the death of the male. Moving the female is the sensible thing to do.

Do you know if there is a chance these animals will ever be displayed at Chester? I still hope to see them one day.

None too sure as import/export post Brexit are a total disaster. At the best of times the Ministry and Customs don't know what to do or have simply no clue since new regulations been put into place at short notice (this invariably and brilliantly happens quite often during any given year post Brexit).

Im glad you think it isnt a total disaster..but as owner of the above Galidictis,a magazine and a mail order business I beg to differ..its a constant stream of problems. At zoo level I have yet to meet a professional person who has ANYTHING good to say about Brexit with regard to the transfer of zoo animals.

As yet Chester have only a distant thought to put Galidictis on show...and at the moment they are rather embroiled in the Heart of Africa expansion anyway. It might be more practical to try and see the species at Bede`s school zoo by appointment(which is around 5 miles from Drusilla`s).

I had no idea that place even existed!

Well, thanks for all the information. At least now I know I don't have to count on seeing the vontsira's in Magdeburg.
I might keep it in my travel plans anyway, or I might switch it out for something else.

In February a Red-bellied tamarin (Saguinus labiatus) was born.

In March the zoo announced that female South African elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) Sweni is pregnant and expected to give birth in Summer 2026. This would be the first African elephant birth in the history of Zoo Magdeburg!

The newborn Mishmi Takin (Budorcas taxicolor taxicolor) is a male!

In March a new species arrived at the zoo, namely a male Visayan warty pig (Sus cebifrons negrinus) from Parken Zoo. Soon a female will arrive from Tierpark Schönebeck.

In March a Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) was born.

In April a North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) was born.
