Maharani Zoo controversy

A few days ago, a TikTok video went viral showing an Sumatran tiger named Bhaksi on Maharani Zoo. The zoo quickly clarified about Bakshi on their Instagram account.

@Nandito, can you explain what the issue was and how the zoo responded to public concerns?
The tiger that was shown in the video was skinny and tail-less.

The zoo explained that the Bhaksi was a old tiger (14 years old). The angle make Bhaksi looks skinny (The recorder filmed Bhaksi from above) and he lost most of his tail after a fight with another tiger.

The latter does underline tiger accommodation and husbandry management may be improved. Or at least there is room to improve for the exhibits.

Secondly, I sincerely hope PKBSI and the international zoo community make more serious work of international cooperation and animal exchanges. Around 30+ Sumatran tigers have no living descendants in Indonesian zoos and captive-breeding really needs to take stock of this as well as redistributing some of the offspring of breeding pairs around the country and internationally.

Update: The uploader of the TikTok video apologize for the misunderstanding. The zoo invite her to meet Bhaksi up close.

The zoo thanks her for the video, saying that it motivated them to be better and the zoo became popular after Bhaksi went viral.

I found a recent feature article on the Maharani - Lamongan Goa Zoo and the tiger Baksi.

Following the complaints a team from the national BKSDA and Wild Rescue Unit inspected the zoo in early September. Male Sumatran tiger Baksi (aged 15 and born in 2005) was found to be an already elderly tiger, but was otherwise found to be in good health and well fed.

Maharani currently maintains 5 Sumatran tigers, including 3 offspring of Baksi: Rengganis, Raung and Rani.
