Malayan Tigers in Europe

Wasn't the pair of Malayan tigers of Berlin in a breeding situation too ?

Does anybody have info about the three Malayan tiger which moved to Sóstó Zoo some years ago? Tango(1:0), Lampun(1:0), Reila(0:1). Which zoos they came? Did they have children before? Who are their parents? Do they have siblings?

Tango was in Zoo Berlin and he came from Singapore zoo. In 2007 he got female Reika from Halle zoo and she is from Halle bloodline like the most tigers in Europe. Lampun was born in 2011 with his other 2 sisters and he came from Tierpark Berlin. His parents are Tarek and Sarai and they are from Halle too. In 2012 Tango, Lampun and Reika was transported to Sosto Zoo and in 2013 Tango passed away. If anyone want more info about malayan tigers in Europe and their history you can ask me in the chat.

Yesterday, Malayan tiger Cindy died at Zoo Halle at the age of 21. Last weekend, her health deteriorated so much that new examinations led to the conclusion that Cindy had to be euthanised.

She was born on 22 March 2002 in Melaka, Malaysia, and came to Zoo Halle in July 2003. Here she had several offspring, which now live in other European zoos.

With Cindy, the last Malayan tiger in Germany has died.

Lampun had 3 sisters. One died young at Berlin and the 2 others went to French zoos. Salween still lives at Parc des Félins, she gave birth to 2 female cubs here in 2019. I've seen Mandalay at Mervent in 2016. She was killed by the male in 2017 :(

Malayan tiger Cicip in Hamerton zoo was found by his keepers after passing overnight due to a heart attack. He was 14.
Very unfortunate as Cicip (born was probably the sole Malayan tiger that came in direct from a South East Asian Zoo that is not Melaka/Taiping line.

Is female Sahaya still around Hamerton?

Sahaja was still there in January

Ther's also his older brother Kawi at Planète Sauvage (France). He's 18 years old this month, and never breed...

I believe the current status of Malayan tiger in Europe is like this:
Hamerton: 0.1
Naturzoo Mervent: 1.1
Nesles Parc des Felins: 1.3
Port St. Pere: 0.2 + 1.1
Praha: 1.1
Usti: 1.1

The EAZA Tiger EEP no longer support maintaining this subspecies Panthera tigris jacksoni unfortunately and decided to focus for S.E. Asia on Sumatrans P.t. sumatranae. Even though, in the wild the jacksoni subspecies is near collapse at less than 100 individuals (compared to 400 in Sumatran tiger) and the captive populations are around 80+ (AZA+EAZA). Fact of the matter is the European population is ageing. I know a few zoos in S.E. Asia hold Malayans ... but I guess that list is a little longer (Taiping and Singapore Zoos). One issue with the European population is that a large number of individuals are very related and go back to the Halle Zoo line (1.2 imports Singapore / Zoo Melaka).

Any ideas now how some zoos like Nesles and Port St. Pere or Naturzoo Mervent would see a way through?

Planete Sauvage has 5 tigers, 2.3 of which are too old and only one tiger is not related. Sosto zoo also has two tigers, a male and a female. I think Port. St. Pere and Natur zoo Mervent will focus on breeding Sumatran tigers, unfortunately. I would love it if at least one zoo in Europe would dare to reintroduce Malayan tigers, but the chances for that are very low. Currently, I have a list of Malayan tigers in captivity in North America, Europe, and most zoos in Asia.

Guys, Malayan tiger population is a dead end in Europe for a while..importing a pair is hard and would only postpone the harsh reality. It is much better to focus on Siberian and Sumatran and try to send the few valuable individuals remaining, somewhere else (both Asia and USA have better-shaped population) where they can bring new genes rather than hoping that a European zoo "dare" to keep going with them, just for the sake of it.

I was not advocating for another tiger subspecific program per se, but realistically if we do want to save a unique subspecies (and mind you we already "lost" Caspian - virgata and Bali - sondaica and Javan - balica) we need all the collections prepared to hold them on board.

Yes, the European population is quite small and for part quite inbred, however if say 4-8 collections hold small groups of jacksoni under the management of North American AZA ... what is the harm in that. Mind you the genetic testing and research of the European population of Malayan - jacksoni has been conducted by our overseas compadres in the AZA SSP.

Thirdly, the export of the 2019 born sisters from Nesles to Taipeh Zoo will ensure that the SEAZA may put greater emphasis on creating that much needed regional Malayan - jacksoni and Indochinese - corbettii next to the one for Sumatran - sumatranae (mainly Indonesia + a few other countries in the region).

ATM, the SEAZA region Malayan program is promoted by Singapore Zoo, Taiping, Malaysia and a few others in Malaysia (Negara, Melaka, et al). That population needs to grow further in order to enable the less than 100 figure for the subspecies to start to recover. The Malaysian conservation authorities are in the process of creating a breeding center for release at Lanchang.

Correction :
Hamerton: 0.1
Naturzoo Mervent: 1.0
Nesles Parc des Felins: 1.1
Port St. Pere: 2.3
Praha: 1.1
Usti: 1.1
Sosto : 1.1

Port St Pere acquired the pair from Berlin in 2022 in addition to their previous 1.2, the 2 young females from Nesles left for Taipei, and the female at Mervent left too ! Last month, for a zoo in India.
Now only Port St Pere has a tiger not from Halle line, he's 18, and never accepted a female. We know for years now the population is dead without new imports, and european zoos decided to let go
