Mammal Orders and Families - how many have you seen?

Which ones stood out to you?

I'd say the most memorable additions were the Phalangeridae when I got to see Bear Cuscus at Tierpark Berlin - delightful animals! Tarsiers are probably the rarest of the lot on that list but as you (probably?) know the exhibit for them at Ueno isn't the best so it's pretty bittersweet. Also loved seeing musk deer at TP Berlin, another really nice species in a lovely environment. As a side note have been within two metres of a ringtail possum on four occasions but as the individual in question is particularly uncooperative that one will have to wait.
And where are you going this summer? I'm guessing either Colugo or American Opossums would be the order you're hoping to add.

You're right, I'll be in Singapore for most of the summer for non-zoo/animal reasons so fingers crossed will be able to spot a colugo! With any luck it'll make my wild life lists a little more interesting too :).

Marry Christmas fellow ZooChaters :) Following @Giant Eland updated family list , I will post my latest Mammal family count. 24 Orders / 109 Families. Bold the ones I have seen.

Dugongidae (Dugong)

Seen all four tapirs! (Don't count Kabomani since that's disputed)

Malayan tapir: Zoo Miami, San Diego Zoo, Bronx Zoo, Zoo Praha, Woodland Park Zoo (SNS, off exhibit due to renovation), Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium
Brazilian tapir: Zoo Praha (may have accidentally skipped this enclosure based on my photos... good grief.), Budapest Zoo
Baird's tapir: San Diego Zoo, Los Angeles Zoo
Mountain tapir: Los Angeles Zoo

I wonder if anyone wants to go through and figure out a ranking??
I thought I had done that at one point in the thread, but looking through my posts it seems I had not.

I'll get around to that when I have time, unless someone else wants to get in first.

Since my initial post I have seen one extra Order (Afrosoricida – tenrecs) and these extra Families, all captive unless otherwise noted:

Tenrecidae (tenrecs) – Japan

Cheirogaleidae (dwarf lemurs) – Taiwan

Daubentoniidae (Aye-aye) – Japan and Taiwan

Pitheciidae (sakis) – Hong Kong and China

Gliridae (dormice) – Japan

Ctenodactylidae (gundis) – Japan

Bathyergidae (blesmols) – Japan

Talpidae (moles) – Japan

Vespertilionidae (vesper bats) – captive in Japan, and wild in Taiwan

Mephitidae (skunks) – Japan

Ziphiidae (beaked whales) – wild in Japan

I also saw captive examples of Tupaiidae [tree shrews] and Soricidae [shrews] in Japan (previously only seen wild on my list), plus I have now seen Orycteropodidae [Aardvarks] to my satisfaction (seen previously but so long ago I didn’t really have any memory of them).

These are the 29 Orders. I have marked the ones I've seen only in captivity by underlining them; the ones I've seen only in the wild are in bold; and those I have seen in both captivity and in the wild are both underlined and in bold.

I'll get around to that when I have time, unless someone else wants to get in first.

I’ve made a rough list. Note that most of the posts are from several years ago (only a few people have updated since), and I’ve only included those which stated the full totals because I’m not going to manually count up everything in all the individual lists.

I’ve ordered them by the Family totals because the Orders are all pretty close.

But 27 Orders and 142 Families using @Chlidonias's taxonomy where the orders of Cetartiodactyla and Eulipotyphla are both split making 29 total orders instead of 27.

I was very excited to add Microbiotheria (Monito del Monte) here: Mammal Orders and Families - how many have you seen? which made me the first zoochatter to have 27 orders on that original taxonomy.

If my count is correct, I'm at 17 orders and 74 families for combined wild + captive, for wild only my count is 9 orders and 24 families. This is counting Cetacea and Artiodactyla as a single order, so if you want to count them seperately, add 1 to to the order count.

If I counted correctly I should be at 26 orders and 128 families.

I added both into the list above.

Here's mine:

Mammal orders:

23/27 total, 12/27 captive only, 10/27 wild & captive, 1/27 wild only (9 wild total)

Mammal families:

107/159 total, 73/159 captive only, 29/159 wild & captive, 5/159 wild only (29 wild total)

Mine with species counts per family. Where I have seen a species both in the wild and in captivity, it counts towards the wild number, not the captive number.

Monotremata

  • Ornithorhynchidae - 1 sp. wild

  • Dasyuridae - 3 sp. captive

  • Peramelidae - 4 sp. wild

Instead of editing, I was told to repost the corrections:

The year is coming to a close and I've had quite a few successes on the Mammal Families front thanks to trips visiting Western Sahara, Gabon, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Ethiopia and Djibouti.

I'm will be following the current taxonomy used by both Lynx's HMW and ASM Mammal Diversity Database which differs a bit from the taxonomy in this thread.

I'm sharing my updates below where I've indicated 8 that are "NEW" This includes 2 completely new families (Chinchilla Rats and La Plata Dolphin), and 6 seen wild for the first time (Gundis, Naked Mole-rat, Octodonts, Jerboas, Mouse-tailed Bats, and Amazon River Dolphins). 15 Families remain!!
