Desmond Morris listed three species of Zaglossus: bruijni (3-4 toes on the front feet), bartoni (5 toes) and bubuensis (5 toes). I am not the only person who counted the toes on the front feet of the long-beaked echidnas at London Zoo and decided that the species was Z. bartoni and not Z. bruijni. Z. bartoni and Z. bubuensis were later incorporated into Z. bruijni until this 'species' was later split into Z. bruijni, Z. bartoni and Z. attenboroughi.
