After a break of almost 6 years, a manati was born at Nuremberg Zoo January 21. The first time mother was born at the Zoo also, but she has to less milk, so the calf must be bottle fed. Its Number 16, which is raised at the zoo, but a few more are born at the zoo, but couldn't be raised.

At this time, the zoo has begun the construction of the upcoming Dolphin lagoon and the new Manati house.

Its something special, in europe, more elephants are born in a year than manatees...

I think, only Beauval in France has bred manatees also in europe. Amsterdam has bred Mantees several time, they had the europe first breeding of the species in 1977, but they don't keep manatees anymore.

I'm not sure, if Odense in Denmark has bred them yet, Toddy could know that.

Berlin Animal Park has had several birth, but none of the babies has survived, the last birth there was a few years ago.

The Us Zoos are not breeding manatees, because its not allowed to bred manatees in zoos. The zoos there are keeping rescued animals.

Odense Zoo has the so far best exhibit for manatees in Europe and have had four manatee births since they started keeping them in 2001. Unfortunately, two of these have been stillbirths. Two of them though, born 2003 and 2005, are healthy and still living in Odense. They currently keep 3.2 manatees, of which 1.1 comes from Guayana, 0.1 was born in Amsterdam and 2.0 are offspring of the Guyana female.

Randers Tropical Zoo in Denmark also keep manatees and a very nice exhibit. The currently keep 1.1 a female from Guyana and Bertus, the last manatee to leave Amsterdam in 2002. They had a stillbirth in 2007 and will hopefully breed more in the future.

What about Burgers Zoo? Have the not bred their manatees?

@Toddy. Thank you for your danish Manatee Infos. Nuremberg has send Mantees to Denmark, I think, to Odense, are they still alive ?Sounds good, can you post some pictures of the Manatee exhibits at Randers and Odense ?

I don't know, if Arnhem has bred Manatees, I never heared about any breeding of them at burgers.

@Pygathrix. Nuremberg had two twin births of mantees, and all four calfs could be raised.

Sorry I didn't know that; given the overall low number of births twins might not be that unusual. Is the mother at Beauval related to the Nuremburg animals?

The manatee sent to Odense from Nürnberg was Henriette. She is born in Amsterdam and lived in Nürnberg for a few years. The was sent to Odense Zoo in 2001 when the exhibit opened, and was the first manatee in Denmark.
She showed typical stereotypic behaviour after living in the the small tank in Nürnberg and then suddenly being let out into the large pool in Odense. In 2002 she received some company from Guyana. She now swims around happily with the others. She had her first baby in 2007, but unfortunately it was a stillbirth.

@Zebraduiker: I'm way ahead of you ;)

And to complete the information, here's Arnhem's details
Keeping them since 1988 (opening Bush)
Bred twice
-1988 1,1 from Nürnberg
-1991 1,0 from Artis
-1993 0,1 born
-1995 1,0 born
-1996 1,0 departed to Singapore
-1998 1,0 departed to Beauval
-2005 1,0 came from Beauval
-2007 0,1 died

This may be going abit of topic, but does anyone know ehich animals are still at Beauval. The european animals seem to be moved around with little knowing of it.

I hope more zoos begin keeping Manatees they're amazing animals aren't they!!

Duisburg is going to keep Manatis after the death of the last boto at the "Rio-Negro-House"....

Edinburgh have a pool for manatee planned as part of their oceans and wetlands biome, in their masterplan.

So both Duisburg, Emmen, Bristol and Edinburgh wants to keep manatees within the next number of years? That's pretty ambitious considering the low number of manatees kept in Europe.

12.12 + the new baby in Nürnberg are kept in seven different European institutions and their reproduction rates and infant survival rates are sadly not very impressive.

wow, I did not know that Nürnberg breeds manaties, it is great... :) but those animals really need better facility, the current one is too small, I think.

and please, is there anybody who can tell me anything about dolphin lagune? I know Delphinlagune im Tiergarten Nrnberg. Einzigartig in Europa. Delphinterapie, Artenschutz, Erlebnis, Bildung, Forschung. and I checked ZOO web and all arcticles in press, but ZOO does not release any new information. It is pretty awful... because I am very excited about it.
Do not you have any photos of construction? Do you know anybody who visits this ZOO? If yes, can you, please, send me a PRIVATE message? Thank you very much... oops:

Well, they have been breeding Carribean manatees since 1981, with 15 (this calf is probably number 16) successful births so far...;)

Your bad luck to find any new information about the "Lagune" might be a result of the querrel the zoo had in the recent past with protests of the anti-zoo lobby and especially the "dolphin hugger" fraction and the more or less "successful" focus on "Flocke". Therefore, they maintain a rather low public profile...
