Jaguar shot dead at Manaus CIGS Zoo during Olympic torch relay

Rio 2016: Jaguar in Amazon torch relay shot dead - BBC News

A jaguar has been shot dead shortly after it was used in an Olympic torch relay at a zoo in the Brazilian city of Manaus, the army said.

The female jaguar escaped its handlers after the ceremony on Monday and attacked a soldier, a spokesman said.

Four tranquiliser darts failed to stop it and a soldier shot it with a pistol.

Organisers for the Rio Games said it had been a mistake to exhibit the Olympic torch next to a chained wild animal.

These were extremely sad news... Still reminds us nowadays how mean people can be. It was a ridiculous idea, that, in my opinion, finished in the worst way possible...
I wish they would have fired the responsible zoo manager (and political managinators) for this as it exemplifies a complete lack of concept of adequate zoo husbandry management. Aside, the idea of animal performances in this fashion are totally outdated. I expect what I wish for has never happened ...., and they are still in place despite the dramatic consequences. Sadly!

Perhaps an idea to start individual threads for each of the major Brasilian zoos. Manaus is a big city ...., on the banks of the Amazon ... and with one of the rarest tamarin species just around the corner from the city (and being threatened by that same city for land and resource use).

Yeah, everything was wrong with this "presentation"... Something should have been done at the time, but... nothing... It's at least frustrating for anyone who cares a little for the animals...

About the threads for each zoo, some already have,(BH, SP, RJ...) and I agree about creating some for the other institutions that still haven't.
