Manchester Zoo Manchester zoo

Alas I found this thread an hour ago and the idea that a zoo that 'had potential to challenge Chester' was in my hometown right under my nose brought a lot of excitement. You can imagine my disappointment when the idea was scrapped. However, I am inspired. I am still young (heck I'm still not finished with secondary school ) and I know opening a zoo will take a hell a lot of cash, and the ability to correctly define what a loan is ( heh, heh... ) but I'm extremely passionate about conservation and animals in general and have a hundred million ideas about, somewhat financially realistic, plans on how to start a zoo. So I'm going to try, and sometimes thats all it takes.

You sound very much like me when I was your age which was only a couple of years ago now. I have come to realise that a career in hands on conservation is my ideal career. A shame for people who want to set up zoos, aquariums, wildlife rehabilitation centres etc there is not much in the way of personal income and the idea of setting up your own requires past experience and as you've outlined lots of funds.

I was thinking maybe on the outskirts of Trafford as there are many open, hilly plots of land and it's on the other side of Manchester meaning it's further away from Chester

Where in Trafford is open and hilly plus the cost of land as you get closer towards Cheshire gets extortionate. I know of a plot of land which sold recently around that neck of the woods that was maybe only an acre and was only accepting offers £40,000 and above. So a zoo the size of Chester would be costing roughly £5.2 million on land alone going off the price of this plot of land.

Yep... a long way to go (sigh). It is more of a dream than an actual expectation. Nonetheless, thank you for sharing your words of wisdom

And Trafford is on the Chester side of Manchester! Perhaps they meant Oldham, which is on the far side from Chester, hillier, cheaper and was the place last mentioned as a possible site.

Rather like the Heart of England wildlife park !

Whatever happened to this? I remember them announcing plans for a zoo in Reddich, and they wanted it to be run by enthusiasts? I think they even had local business and council backing didn't they? I notice the Facebook page and the website stopped 4 years ago, I take it they just didn't get the funding although it raised over £45000 online.

As you say, there was plenty of council and local business backing, plus the the online funding was very successful. However, the original site that was chosen, Bordesley Abbey grounds and meadows, which is bordered by the river Arrow,a very beautiful place, is controlled by Historic England. There had been previous excavation and areas which although hadn't been, were regarded as potential places of interest. Historic England were adamant that the majority of the site was too important to be used. The council offered an alternative site but it didn't have the appeal and to secure it would have been extremely expensive. Interestingly, the Bordesley site was chosen in the 1960's to be a zoo. The consortium that was interested in building the zoo was lead by a friend of my father's. Unfortunately, the consortium had internal squabbling and it fizzled out. My father's friend gave me the original plans ,which I will always cherish. The emphasis for the original was mainly big cats, birds and primates. My father's friend, actually owned a private zoo near Evesham, I visited many times. A very beautiful place it was.

I think it is a fair bit more relevant than the tangent you are taking this thread on...

Not really...a personal account is just that. I think people are reading far too much into this.

Is he probably that person? Manchester Zoo does have other employees.

So publicly accessible comments from well-respected members of the zoo community in response to the article (e.g. when shared via Zoo News Digest) do not reassure you that Manchester Zoo is forging ahead with its plans, and operating normally? I think the update on a year's worth of activity should help people feel the opposite of let down.
What went wrong with this zoo proposal?
