Visited the Hunter Valley Zoo on Wednesday; some changes have been made to the facility.
These include:
Maned Wolves due to arrive soon for a new enclosure that is nearing completion. They will be coming from Altina.
Barbary sheep are other new additions, as are blue and gold macaws, yellow footed rock wallabies and soon, by the looks of things, some additional small primate species.
The owners are doing a wonderful job doing this zoo up and bringing it up to a high standard.

Sounds like it's worth a look next time I'm up that way.

Maybe I'm getting old and jaded, but it seems to me that the small zoos are more worthwhile than the big players these days.

Hopes to add more wolves to the pack??? Hopefully they mean the zoo plans to house more individuals. Not together.
Interesting that it is the smaller zoos that have finally picked up the baton for this charismatic and endangered exotic species that is actually in the country!

I spent some time at HVZ yesterday and once again I am blown away by the improvements and expansion of the park. The Maned Wolf exhibit is pretty stock standard for a smaller park, I had some questions about the design features and keeper access features that were answered honestly by the staff (such as the animals being free contact). Over all I think the money spent on the exhibit was done perfectly and utilized correctly and its overall design works, I would have liked the stand off barrier to be slightly closer (as close as legally possible) however it was incorporated by an original fence so made sense to save money and leave it where it is for the time being (hopefully future developments might make it more practical). The meerkat enclosure is outstanding, I think the HVZ team deserve absolute praise for the enclosure as its perfect, much larger then some of the enclosures at the larger zoos and incorporates glass seamlessly. I never got the opportunity to ask what the substrate was but it seems like a sand/coral mix that the meerkats seemed to love.
Seems like they are redeveloping some of the older primate enclosures which is always good, personally I love the primate enclosures at this zoo they all get you within perfect distance of the animals and the animals are always happy to interact with the public and seem very content. HVZ seems to be powering through developments and I think the owners deserve credit where it is due. I would like to see a more fluid layout within the park (there are some dead ends that make you think your in an off limits area) and perhaps a little more directional signage would top things off nicely. All in all a fantastic park that is improving tenfold every time I get the opportunity to visit.

Hunter valley zoo was the first zoo Altina has sent the maned wolf to.
Maned wolf is a solitary animal but until a certain age are happy living with litter mates and opposite sex.

Maned wolves have been sent to NT zoo only this year being the second zoo Altina have distributed maned wolves too.

If it where not for these 2 zoos helping Altina's maned wolf population out breeding of the wolf would be a great deal harder. All animals need loving homes that do the animal justice to the public (they need to see them)to help with the education and the importance if these endangered species.

Congrats to hunter valley zoo for doing not only that but much more!!
