Altina has welcomed a new Exotic, Valuable, Canine relative into Australia!

All the way from Nordens Ark Zoo, in Sweden, a male South American Maned Wolf has arrived!

With over a year of red tape and paper work "Pepe" was definitely well worth the wait!

Altina Wildlife Park has cared for Maned wolves since 2008 and is the only Zoo in Australia currently holding this amazing species in its collection!

With our new Swedish import, Altina has secured a viable genetic group, consisting of 13 animals, including our previous 2009 Russian import, "Olinta".

Altina is now part of the European Endangered species Program (EEP) and the European Stud Book (ESB) which will mean more imports are imminent in the future as well as possible exports being required to assist in Overseas Zoo conservation programs.

Thanks to Altina's successful Breeding program, (breeding 6 pups in 2 years) the future for this elusive, elegant animal (declared Endangered by the Argentine Wildlife Board), will be bright here in Australia, with other Zoos wishing to join Altina's goal in Conserving this unusual, long-legged Omnivore.

I only just noticed this titbit of news. It is great that interregional cooperation takes place for the benefit of species conservation and more importantly that overseas collections are accepted into other region's species conservation breeding programs!

A species that our Ozzie friends might see disappear before long has been thrown a lifeline in Australia and perhaps might stimulate other Australian collections to redouble their efforts to get them back into the various S.American themed collections here!

I wish we could do similar with some iconic Australian taxa overseas (e.g. echidna, koala, Tassie devil, rock wallabies, rat kangaroos) as is now happening with quolls in Europe thanks to determined efforts by Leipzig Zoo (incidentally breeding them well). Not forgetting tree kangaroos (Krefeld EEP coordinator with strong support from ISB in Australia and regular interregional exchanges).

I would really hope this kind of cooperation can be expanded for the benefit of species diversity in both Continents!
 
Just letting everyone know that the Maned wolf breeding program is going great so far here in Australia.
last year Altina had 2 litters born
4 boys Lobo, Rio, Pacho, & Chico. (Pacho & Rio where sent to crocodylus park this year)
by Russian Born Olinta and Senna.
As well as 1:1 Sol & Bly
which are our Swedish import "Pepe" first ever litter with Chiquita (Altina Born)
with hopefully more wolf pups to come this year as well as more imports.
The Maned Wolf breeding program is part of the EEP with future hopes to become a Australian Managed breeding program once again

The Maned Wolf is now officially a managed species in Australia again with 22 animals in the country plus more imports and breeding possibilities still available!

Given the success the species is having is all outside the "big" zoos, I wonder if they will want to acquire any in the future?

Only if it fits with their collection plans! Both Melbourne and Perth got out of Maned wolves in the past because they didn't fit the Africa/Asia/native policy. Maybe Adelaide with their new focus on Sth American species or Melbourne with it's oddly themed Predators exhibits might consider them? Personly think they are perfect for the three open-range zoos (and yes I know Dubbo had them in the past too - in fact don't understand why they got rid of them).
 
Sorry to resurrect an old thread. We recent visited Taronga Western Plains Zoo and it was sad to see the Maned Wolf exhibit looking derelict and with large pots blocking the entrance. My wife and I both thought that Western Plains Zoo seemed rather "forgotten" after the Indian rhino and Siamang. Bison are gone, Maned Wolf gone, all but the Galapagos Tortoise gone from the previous South American region. It would be good to see Maned Wolves back there in the future.
 
I would have to agree. Not much to se after the one horned rhinos. The galapagos tortioses are about the only thing worth stopping for. that section of the zoo needs a make over

Usually a timid animal, "Tepin" is extremely relaxed and is already Hand Feeding from her new keepers!
(Typical baby though and doesn't like her veggies!)

Altina has cared for Maned wolves since 2008 and now have the only breeding Maned Wolves left in Australia AND largest collection worldwide in zoo establishments!
(Declared endangered by the Argentine Wildlife Board)

Altina is very proud of their success with this species and are changing how they are managed world wide!

With our new import, Altina now house 16 individuals, including our 2 previous imports in 2009 ("Olinta") & 2013 ("Pepe").

Altina are now, not only part of the European Endangered species Program (EEP) and the European Stud Book (ESB) but also, as of this year, now manage the Australasian Maned Wolf Stud Book on behalf of the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA)!

Altina's goal is to save the unusual long legged omnivore.
