nice place, lots of pics here, all grassed enclosures, open range, and its 1st birthday is december 16th, so not opened long either
 
Well now it's all going brown because of the drought and the lions cage is pretty much the only thing getting watered
It is still an awesome place though and most people haven't heard of it
 
It's been open to the public for quite a few years but changed hands a year or two ago.

PAT - what did you think of the accomodation for the monkeys and the alligator?
 
With the monkeys i don't think that they put very much effort into making it look natural, alot of steel and stuff and i couldn't see the alligators while i was there
 
Yeah, it's a pretty good place for the size of it and how many people it's run by.

I like the fact that a few of the deer are free-roaming around the place so when you're having a look at all the other animals, you've got a deer by your side!
 
I visited again today and it looked amazing. All the paddocks were green and you could see snow on the top of mount Bulla. We saw the lion feeding this time and got to see most of the animals being fed.
I found out that the two lions were born at that monbulk safari thing and were only cubs when it closed down and then went to lakes entrance wildlife park and now live at Mansfield zoo. At the feeding they were fed two chickens each. They also have a baby wombat which is pretty impressive because I believe wombats are quite hard to breed in captivity. And I got to see the Alligator but it was just sitting there

I'm one of those people who didn't even know about it! I'll have to check it out in the future
 
It took me 2 and a bit hours to get there because i live near bendigo and i think it was worth the drive.
 
I think my past reports of Mansfield Zoo aren't very informative. So I'll do a better one now...

As you enter there is an aviary for galahs and a cage for possums (haven't seen them) in a small courtyard area and then you walk out into the main part. First thing to see in the main part is an aviary with peacocks and guineafowls in it and then you turn left to see some very big but very basic paddocks for:-
Blackbuck
Dromedary camels
Ostrich, emu and sambar deer
Bison
Red deer
There is also a smallish alligator exhibit here, a lake and two monkey exhibits for rhesus macaques and a bonnet macaque. They both look somewhat like a large garden shed with mesh around parts of it and I'd like there to be more climbing things but on the plus side there was thick woodchips on the ground for foraging (they were doing this for a while when I was there) If they didn't want to be seen then the back holding areas were open to them all day if they so wished.

You walk down past the lake and this is where we saw a lot of the free range animals. Llamas, alpacas, fallow deer, wallabies and kangaroos. There are also exhibits for Rusa deer, Boar goats, swamp wallabies, agile wallabies, white red kangaroos, dingos, common wombats, fallow deer and lions.
All of these exhibits are very big and basic as well except the dingos, lions and wombats. The dingos have a really cool exhibit with long grass, lots of trees and a jeep to play in. The wombats a little yard next to a night house that you can look into but nothing is/can grow in their yard. The lions exhibit is too small for them IMO and I think that the fence is unnecessarily high.
 
So Steve, how much did the old owners advertise the zoo at? Any idea ;]

Have just noticed halls gap zoo changed hands 18 months ago as well????

I spent three hours with my three kids at the Mansfield zoo today. They have not got a lot of species but do a good job with what they have.

Their Lions are the main attraction. They have 2 brothers who are 14 years old. We had a good viewing at feeding as we were the only ones in the zoo at feeding time.

They have 3 dingos which looked like they may be old. Their exhibit even has their own car for their entertainment. (I put a picture in the gallery)

The Grey Kangaroos seem to be having a baby boom with at least 6 young joeys. They are all very quiet and are happy to be patted and hand fed. They mugged us for some pellets and I had to carry the feed as they just took them off the children. The Wallabies are next to the lions and also have quite a few joeys.

They have Fallow, Red, Rusa and Sambar Deer which are all quite and able to be hand fed.

The Blackbuck were the most nervous and flighty animals there and spent their time in the far end of the paddock.

The Wombats were out feeding and one has a joey in its pouch. The woman who works there told me she has an albino wombat she is raising but it must be returned to the wild and can't be exhibited in the zoo.

I could only see the Quol's tail.

We could not see the Alligator.

The two Camels were very friendly and could be hand fed.

The Bison never stopped grazing to even look up.

Two emus and an Ostrich were in one paddock and were all looking to be fed. The emus had 5 eggs.

They had 2 species of monkey but I did not spend much time there.

There was an avery which looked like it could be good but I was disappointed to find it only contained Chooks and Rabbits.

This Zoo is very good for young children as almost all animals were tame and could be hand fed, and children love Lions. (mine did)

where are the lions coming from? They're popping up everywhere now!
 
Juat a guess but Id say mogo. Mogo is sending some to Altina this week and have recently sent a tawny female to dubbo.

It would be interesting to see the new enclosure that has been Govertment funded.
 
what are the Australian zoos that have white lions now?

National, Mogo, DDZ, Mansfield and Zoo-Doo. Any others?
 
I like white lions, I think they're beautiful and (at least so far and hopefully never will) don't carry the same inbreeding problems that white tigers do. But surely we're getting close to the point where they are going to negatively impact on the tawny lions program, by taking up available spaces?
