Marineland Antibes Marineland Antibes News

Few weeks ago a rumor started on internet, that Marineland was going to send its orcas to Suma Aqualife Park in Japan. According with this statement One Voice accuse Marineland de vouloir vendre ses orques au Japon, le parc répond , the park doesn´t "cofirm or deny" this info. That sounds like is very probably the movement will happen. If that´s the case, I think is a pity. The enclosures in Japan are smaller than the one in France, and I´m afraid the group would be split among the other Japanese aquariums with Orcas

Extremely unexpected loss as Moana the 12 year old killer whale, son of Wikie and Ulises of Seaworld San Diego was found dead this morning. A necropsy has already been done and results will come out in the following weeks.

Where in Japan are they supposed to be going? Would be extremely concerning if they ended up in a fishbowl.

I’ve read rumors of them going to Kobe Suma Sea World (which is opening this June) but there have been no official announcements on where they will go so who knows if it’s true.

Inouk, a orca that lived at MLA for 25 years passed away the 28th of March. now only two orcas remain at the park which are Wikie and her son Keijo. Necropsy results is pending i believe

Marineland Antibes has seen its attendance plummet over the years, from 1.2 million a year to 425,000 annual visitors. Yikes! I'd be intrigued to know what animals are there, as this article claims that the park has 150 species and 4,000 animals, which obviously must include a lot of fish.

Antibes: French marine park to close over law banning killer whale shows

The entire park will close for good?! Although there are/were some things to improve, all in all these are horrible news for the zoo world.
I can see in my mind the animals rights activists and their allies dancing full of happiness, looking already for next targets like a ban for elephants, apes, big bears and big cats. The piece by piece strategy...

According to another article "only' 150 individuals aren't fish or corals, which both are included at the 4000 animals. Two killer whales, two group of bottlenose dolphin, five different pinniped species, three penguin species, a small flamingo flock and green sea turtles are the one that i can remember from my visit at april.

Indeed, this aren't good news at all.

Tho I'm not the biggest fan of cetacean captivity, I think that it can be achieved successfully in the same way as elepahnts and great apes husbandry has been done. Orcas have been a murky situation from the start, but I think that the whole situation has gone out of hand. Now the facility will sent their last orcas to a japanese institution where they will be forced to be with animals that they haven't met before+all the stress of transporting them to a very far country and beeing in a facility they've never been before. And the closure of the facility hasn't make a change to the orca captivity situation, so I think than instead of closing the park, solutions for the park husbandry should have been made.

No, there is only one option for these orcas: Loro Parque. French government denied the permit to Japan.

From what I know, another main driver of this closure was the dire need for upgrades to the facility’s infrastructure (and frankly their water quality, which has been poor for years). Sadly the park was unable to afford such upgrades, especially since the legality of the shows as they are now is murky, leading to the situation we’re at today. All their animals will be transferred out, with the orcas most definitely going to Loro Parque.

Unfortunately you are absolutely right on the money. Antibes has been struggling had been struggling to keep up with regular maintenance as it was prior to these new legal rulings coming into place forcing them to take more regular measures on such actions.

The orcas will go to Loro Parque. Likely next month now it seems. The dolphins may too.

Bad news: the December 5th hearing has taken place and it’s been decided the whales must stay in France until an “expert assessment” has been done, regardless of whether Marineland is closed or not.

Regardless of the opinion of groups like One Voice, there are no sanctuaries and Marineland’s infrastructure and water quality is failing. Forcing the whales to stay at this point is in blatant disregard for their welfare. For how long will this go on? At this point these whales just need to get out ASAP. Hopefully they don’t end up like Moana or Inouk (who may still be alive if previous transfers were not blocked).

One Voice on Instagram: "La cour d’appel d’Aix-en-Provence vient de rendre sa décision : Wikie et Keijo doivent rester sur place jusqu’à la fin de l’expertise, fermeture de Marineland ou pas. #SauvonsNosOrques #StopDelphinarium"
