Marquee animal meaning?

cornu aspersum

I have heard this term used at times but not prominently and I remember this being used at more than one occasion to refer to Asiatic black bears.

Not heard the term applied to animals but I’d guess it could be similar to the phrase sometimes seen in the news or in marketing ‘marquee event’ - adding marquee to a thing to suggest it’ll attract large crowds or audiences.

At least on Zoochat it seems to be mainly a North American expression with regards to zoo animals. I searched for the single word "marquee" on Zoochat, and almost (but not entirely) all the references to "marquee animals" were by Americans and Canadians.

Thanks all. So it is basically a synonym for crowd pleasers or ABC species.
