Marwell Wildlife using GPS collars to help endangered zebra

Conservationists are using GPS collars in a bid to protect the world's most endangered zebra.

The experts from Marwell Wildlife, in Winchester, Hampshire, will use the technology to monitor 20 Grevy's zebra in Northern Kenya.

The project, in collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service and the Grevy's Zebra Trust, will track the animals for one year.

The data will be used to inform planning and conservation decisions.

Not surprised. I'm only a couple of miles away. After torrential rain all morning and high winds now I should think a few trees may come down in the next few hours.

I visited today. Notes and observations

  • Was there a second baby sitatunga last year? I know there was one in the spring. I thought it looked like there were two juveniles, one significantly larger than the other.
  • The green toads have moved from Thriving Through Nature to Cold Blooded Corner. They are in with the Egyptian tortoises. Oscillated skinks have also been added to their vivarium.
  • There was a sign saying the bush dogs are off show as they are being monitored by a vet.
  • The lower of the two paths through the wallaby walkthough is closed for maintenance (there was a sign saying so). The closed path is the one with the bridge over the stream so I presume it is to do with that.

There were four or five Sitatunga born last year two or three of them did not survive.

Anyone know if the female giraffe is still scheduled to arrive soon or has that been put on hold?

I would expect things to carry on up to a point , as I think the new Director will be from a business background, but maybe there will be changes to the animal collection this year as new people were appointed last year.

Only reason being is that the only female giraffe suitable for breeding is Ruby & she's 11 in the summer.

If the director is not from a zoo industry background, that is a big fail. They may be marginally better equipped to run a good business, they will merely be good financial caretakers only, however in terms of running the full spectrum of tasks for a conservation education facility charity not the best choice to run the show.

Ruby has always been on the very small size, and Marwell have never wanted to breed from her.

What are marwells long term plan with giraffes? Do they still have hybrids? And what species do they have if not?

Further, does anyone know of any updates with Snow Leopard Enclosure progress? Excited to see a new exhibit and more of them.

Hoping 2024 will be as good, if not better, for Marwell than 2023.

When I visited last weekend there appeared to have been little further progress with the snow leopard extension. They appear to have just started landscaping the interior. It might be that the weather has prevented them from being able to do much.

I believe they still do have some hybrid giraffes (as well as pure Rothchild's). I am not sure who is what though with the exception of the bull, Mburo, who is Rothchild's. I think they are naturally phasing out the hybrids. They won't get rid of them but they won't acquire any more or breed from them.

There is 1:4 giraffes in total, M'boro, Ruby, Makeda & Christa.

  • M'boro is pure Rothschild(2019 dob) & new breeding bull eventually
  • Ruby (2012) purebred Rothschild conceived at Woburn, non-breeding as above
  • Makeda born Marwell 2005 hybrid female non breeding
  • Christa born Marwell 2008 hybrid female non breeding

I believe they were also supposed to acquire a breeding Rothchild's female about 18 months ago, about the same time as they got Mburo. Mburo came from Chester but the female was supposed to come from a zoo on the continent. The move though got tied up in Brexit red tape and ultimately ended up not happening as a result.
