Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoo News 2024

That is the third species where they have lost their breeding male this year after bongo and mountain zebra isn't it? It has been quite a bad year for animal deaths.

Shame, Marwells breeding success with Bongo & Okapi is Notable. I hope all 3 species can be matched up, however I Understand especially Mountain Zebra are not in great supply.

A video has been posted to social medias for an upcoming event.... lego bricks are shown. Gee wizz....

If it's any consolation it's only described as a summer event as opposed to an April-September event.

Other members will be able to give more specific information than me, but from what's been discussed transporting hoofstock especially seems to be quite difficult- Marwell are the only collection in UK with Arabian & Beisa oryx and no imports of them have been made since the Beisa's arrival I think. (Marwell definitely need to import some individuals to keep certain groups going and expanding) However with Warjun (snow leopard) and the maras, perhaps it is easier for other groups of animals?

The new male Grévy zebra came from Ouewehands, Netherlands, in October, and in November a bush thick-knee came from Prague Zoo (where the Chacoan mara had come from not long before) so it does seem that animal movements into the UK are gradually returning.

Two of them now?

Whilst I doubt Lego would be a prime attraction to encourage many of us on ZooChat to visit, the fact it is returning, and in a new format, must mean that it attracts visitors to Marwell (and other zoos that have followed the Lego route) who would not otherwise visit, which is important to zoo funding through increased attendance. And, to use your words, "if it's any consolation", there are other events being promoted for 2025 that have direct animal relevance, such as Scimitar-horned Oryx Day, Carnivore Week and Native Species days, the later publicity gives the opening date for the crayfish/sand lizard development as the 29th March.
