Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoo news 2025

Marwell has made announcement of the Summer LEGO event to the 'marmite' response [i.e. "Yay!" "Oh, come on!"], 'Extinction'.
I've come to accept that I may not care for it but there will be people that will and that's fine. At least it's trying to be different from the long-running Brickosaurs.
But what has managed to irk me... I believe the promotional image used by Marwell is an AI image? Big tusks that come from nothing, obviously not made of lego, and whilst yes there's a sabretoothed cat and woolly mammoth in clear view... there's also a good smattering of 'indeterminate creatures' in this image as well as visual elements which don't seem to make sense.
At least the dodo looks mostly fine.

All three female Giraffe gave birth last year but none survived, as you say then Makeda then died.
Is anything known about how and for what reasons (by obduction or pathology) why all 3 giraffes had their calves not surviving (perhaps by stillbirths, miscarriages ... death post-partus)?

Which individuals now constitute the Marwell Wildlife giraffe group?:
M ?
F Christa
F ?
F Makeda - passed away ...

Any information on the current state of things? Are the remaining giraffe cows now - again - pregnant?

Marwell have male Mburo, pure Rothschild, Ruby, female pure, and Christa female hybrid, both Christa and Makeda calves died soon after birth, Ruby calf lived for about three months, I believe both females are now on inplants again.

I think you are worrying about it too much! :)

Another thing I noticed from the inventory. They acquired a male crocodile monitor Hopefully there are plans to breed as Marwell are currently the only UK holder according to zootierliste.

Unless that is wrong it must therefore be an import. They have had quite a few recently, which I consider to be a good sign.

from what I understand they are kept as pets... could be from a private collection?

Yesterday, I visited, probably the most busy day I've seen there! There is a trail around the zoo from this show called 'The Creature Cases', which I hadn't even heard of before my visit, and it attracted a crowd, probably Pairi Daiza size crowds! Practically the only quiet bit was at the okapi house at 1:20 pm. So if you are planning for a Marwell visit this half-term, expect crowds!

Oh no. Does anyone know how old they were?

They really are having a rough run at the moment. They were a popular species. Whenever I went there was always a gathering around their enclosure.

Wonder what they will do with the enclosure.

That's terrible! Poor things and my thoughts go towards their keepers. I actually thought that it was an Enclosure that worked really well for them - compared to Cotswold WP it was much easier to view them. I'm unsure how populous Clouded Leopards are in the UK, is this a major hit to the population?

What I wonder is if they will announce the deaths...
or if they are animal small enough to not do so

Very sad news both Clouded Leopards have been euthanized because of age related problems.
Sad indeed and unexpected. Clouded leopard is still shown on the Marwell website as a focus species for the Home Education Event, scheduled for next week (24th-28thFebruary).on the Marwell website.
News for Marwell members today is that from 1st March membership will also include entry to the Hertfordshire Zoo.

I looked at the Home Learning pdf.
Most of it was OK... and then there was an activity of matching big cats to their habitats [or something of sort]....

Umm... Marwell.... how many legs do your cats have?

As an aside, one of the species listed in the document is Madagascar Hissing Cockroach.

This confused me somewhat....does Marwell still have this species on display? I think they used to be in Tropical World but certainly don't recall seeing them anywhere after that

@dillotest0 Yep Madagascar hissing cockroaches are held in a small room with some other small inverts. it is located next to the swift parrot aviary and play park. It is commonly missed because it's not marked on the map.

I am really surprised that Marwell, an internationally-recognised conservation zoo, used what looks to be AI generated images. Who created it needs to be fired! At least put pictures of your own cats or go to other zoos! Why be lazy!:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:, 0/1 for the team there, improve it.

I think the line of thought was that the activity is matching cats to their habitat, and so as hinting for younger participants the pictures show vividly cats in their habitat.
I agree that being AI the cats don't look too great on second look ... but then I question what else could be done for someone who presumably had to put this activity sheet together in relatively quick time.
