Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoological Park 2023

What a terrible shame - when was it announced they won’t reopen? I thought they said they previously were going to. It really was the highlight of Marwell for me.

It would have been some time ago. The walkway has been closed for several years.

I wonder if the reason the bush dogs are taking a while is because of architectural reasons?
I recall when the foxes were still there [which rarely left their den] there were plastic domes which young visitors could use to 'enter' the fox's exhibit. This is something typically done with meerkats, but Marwell has also done it with domestic rabbit in the past.
And so I wonder if tending of the domes is making the reconstruction of the fox/dog enclosure longer than it was with the erstwhile-ocelot [now caracara] enclosure?

No its because Marwell are concentrating finishing Thriving through Nature which will be opened very soon.

Also going Tommorow... Had a few questions that I missed last time.

Do marwell still hold the following:
- Himilayan Monal
- Lesser Kudu
- Wild Ass
- Hornbill
- Potooro
?

Are there a pair of siamang in the old macaque house?
Are the serval walkways, tiger Renovations and penguin enclosure renovations done?
Where are the Blesbok held currently?

Thanks

There was a young himalayan monal in the enclosure near the walkthrough aviary when I visited recently.

If the old macaque house is the exhibit opposite the otters and warty pigs, then yes.

Serval walkway and penguin renovations still ongoing. Don't remember seeing any renovation around the tigers when I went, but maybe I was on the wrong side of the enclosure.

Blesbok are on the left side of the route, after you pass the Przewalski's horses stables and before you reach the Dik-Dik.

going tomorrow, anything i should see, last time i went was about 10 years ago o_O
Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the Tropical House, the mountain zebra, and the bongo babies. There's a full list of this year's young here. The app's also quite handy for getting around.

Ah no i missed your post oulf have met up, hope your enjoying it, sid u see thr clouded leopards?

Marwell Zoo - July 2023

What. A. Day. Started off on my usual route but went a bit off. Red River Hogs had their walkway closed with a sign saying 'thank you for staying quiet for our new animal'. Sitatunga enclosure was looking nice, seems a few improvements to the grazing area, as with Pygmy Hippos. Semi aquatic house was looking significantly cleaner, saw both hippos inside then Tapirs outside - hoping they'll update Tapirs enclosure next as it's just another plain empty field. Snow leopard was in the cave on first visit, and on a rock outside second, clearly new work is beginning on exhibit expansion/ a new enclosure.

Wall Infront of Thriving through nature was removed, animal signs for 6 species were visible! I saw skink, leafcutter ants, Hyrax, another mammal and another reptile but missed the names and last animal, although may be in my photos. Life among the trees continues to be one of the best areas of marwell, but gosh the whole zoo needs the windows cleaned!!

Mountain zebras have arguably the most dull enclosure, just a field. Macaque Area continues to be empty, a huge waste of space. Fur, feathers and scales was good and bad. Wallaby walkthrough & honeyeater walkthrough are great, loved seeing Tashi and his Exhibit great too, along with Himilayan Monal and the huge aviary for Ibis, egret etc. Cold blooded Corner needs some interior work and some more education. Exhibits need to be added in that courtyard too, noticed an empty, overgrown and boarded off aviary? (Photographed if anyone knows about it).

Banteng enclosure needs some upgrades, old Meerkat enclosure now a wild space, one of the only ones I personally like. Loved how overgrown the Beisa oryx enclosure is now too, looks lovely. Bat Eared fox enclosure has been completely refenced, the "enter the enclosure" domes are gone, photographing over the fence showed clear landscaping work being done in prep for Bush Dog (photographed). Caracara exhibit is wonderful.

Tropical House - Needs some small mammals on the floor, chevrotians should have stayed. The room between the main house and crocodile monitor needs a species too - Loris, Potto would be perfect as mentioned elsewhere. Crocodile monitor area is fine. Okapi house is a one of a kind thing, you get so close to them! Anoa enclosure needs a huge upgrade, tiger enclosure although is excellent and the viewing areas were being renovated… Ima just skip the ostrich and ass enclosures, I think the species could be moved into larger multi species exhibits, would mean more room for new exhibits!

Yellow Mongoose area is great I think! Meerkats should be in more places, but enclosure was fine. Dik Dik and Aridlands enclosures are beautiful, no complaints. The lake with Prezwalskis horse needs more species, it HUGE. Arabian Oryx and Blesbok need some better decor too and better viewing for Blesbok. Clouded leopards were difficult to spot but did see them.

Wild Explorers is so well themed, but I still have issues with main paddock. Could benefit from some small mammals inside though, as very empty indoors. Old marabou stork exhibit was being landscaped! Major surprise.

Giraffe House. Education is very cool, but a small African mammal like Fennec Fox could go nicely where Hyrax used to be. Lemurs have a nice enclosure overall, noticed walkthrough is now a pay extra thing 'animal experience'. Giraffes looked sad in such a small group, hoping to see some new additions soon, roan antelope and Zebra have a steady herd! Heart of Africa has so much empty space. You could easily fit 2 African reptiles in the areas previously used for Potto and Nile Monitor. The field for Giraffes, roan antelope and Zebra could easily have another species! Bongo are increasingly growing in size, enclosure needs some screening plants and trees etc. But is generally good. Kudu should move I think to allow bongos to permanently access the outdoors.

Noticed a new viewing gallery, between old Warthogs and Giraffe house, great view into giraffe outdoor. Warthog still empty and completely overgrow, no sign of anything new. Serval enclosure is great, although both were indoor when I went! The part that used to be for cheetahs, near the start of the boardwalk, was under renovations, seemingly being barred off again with natural reeds and such as well as large metal fences - possibly a rehaul of the area?

Had great views of the flamingo and Pygmy Hippos, but I feel the flamingos could have a better enclosure, but that's just a personal thing, their enclosure is pretty great. Sitatunga - only saw one but the enclosure is lovely as mentioned before. Penguins were still offshow, excited to see the enclosure busy again, with Marwell being approved for another 10 penguins. On the way out, giant Anteater and Bat Eared foxes still pictured on tombola signs.

General improvements:

Signage needs a rehaul
Serval boardwalk as surrounding area feels very empty.
Giraffe, Ass, Blesbok, Arabian Oryx, Banteng, Bongo, Anoa and Mountain Zebra need better decorated enclosures
So many empty enclosures! Red Panda (Old), Macaques, Rhino House, (Old), 2 meerkat enclosures etc.
Fur, Feather and Scales need more species and a good clean.
Windows need cleaning 100%
Tropical house needs some more species to liven it up more

Species (July 2023) as the website is outdated:

Red River Hog, Sitatunga, Pygmy Hippo, Lowland Tapir, Snow Leopard, Binturong, Siamang, Asian Small Clawed Otter, Visayan Warty Pig, Mountains Zebra, Long Nosed Potooro, Bird Species, Parma Wallaby, Red Necked Wallaby, *Various Reptiles*, Red Panda, Blue Honeyeater, *Various Birds*, Himilayan Monal, Banteng, African Wild Ass, Beisa Oryx, Crested Caracara, Okapi, Sloth, *Various Birds & Reptiles*, Leafcutter Ants, Iguana Species, Crocodile Monitor, Cotton Top Tamarin, Bird Species, Bokiboky, Red Ruffed Lemur, Golden Lion Tamarin, White Faced Saki, Goeldis Monkey, Copper Titi Monkey, Bearded Emperor Tamarin, Golden Handed Tamarin, Cusimanse, Pygmy Marmoset, Lowland Anoa, Amur Tiger, Ostrich, Yellow Mongoose, Addax, Dorcas Gazelle, Meerkat, Agama, Locust, Cockroach, Prezwalskis Horse, Kirk's Dik Dik, Arabian Oryx, Blesbok, Clouded Leopard, White Rhino, Scimitar Horned Oryx, Grevys Zebra, Lesser Kudu, Ring Tailed Lemur, Crowned Lemur, Red Bellied Lemur, Rothschild Giraffe, Giraffe, Mountain Bongo, Roan Antelope, Plains Zebra, Serval, Flamingo, Humboldt Penguin.
