Mary Brancker OBE ,CBE was the first female zoo vet ,she was also the first female President of British Veterinary Association. She received an OBE in 1969 and a CBE in 2000.She become Twycross zoo vet from the beginning after becoming great friends with Molly Badham when she owned the petshop in Lichfield. Mary stayed at Twycross until the mid 80s as the vet, and then continued as a volunteer. In 2007 Twycross dedicated new exhibit The Mary Brancker Waterway in recognition to her lifetime commitment to Twycross and animal welfare. She was also President of Twycross Zoo Association.
I worked with Mary during the 1970s and 80s during part of my career at the University of BIRMINGHAM. She was the most gentle and wonderful lady who taught me so much. Her talks and lectures were always filled with people from students to Proffesors.Ironically she told me that her favourite zoo was Taronga park.Even after she retired (if you could call it that) we continued to write to each other, up until two weeks before she died aged 95 2010.I wonder if any other members knew her and have memories of her
