The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore Maryland Zoo News 2020

Stubby, the zoos resident white rhino is leaving the zoo and will be replaced with two younger males. The article doesn’t say exactly where he is going and named his future residence as “a private wildlife conservancy with a large herd of white rhinos” leaving me to believe he is moving to white oak conservation center.

I presume what is meant by the private wildlife conservancy is the Rum Creek facility.

The article specifies the facility is in Florida:
"Stubby will be moving to a private wildlife conservancy in Florida that cares for a large herd of southern white rhinos."

I’ll really miss Stubby, mainly since he was the rhino I saw every year at the zoo since I was little, and the fact I got to literally pet him.

The zoo's collection has downsized since the reptile house, main valley, Tiger, gibbon, and Snow Leopard aren't there, so it's sad that he's leaving.

Those exhibits were atrocious though. It also was not doing as well financially and attendance-wise. They almost had to close around 2004.

Since then they've got back on their feet, and have an excellent standard of exhibitry (new penguin exhibit, polar bear complex, elephant/giraffe/lion renovation). They also have a very nice collection. Yes they don't have Asian animals, but they are a medium-sized zoo they can't have everything.

I agree that they should not keep using those exhibits, but it would have been nice to use the space as an Asian area. I also agree that their exhibits are nice, but I was just saying they lost lots of animals in the past. They still have some good animals, but they have much less than they did before.

Zoo Uploaded a picture as un update to their Amur Leopard exhibit renovation. I dont know what it looked like before seeing as it was well underway on my first ever visit, however its looking pretty nice to me right now.

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore

It is a brand new leopard holding building, which was desperately needed. The large tree that snowleopard posted in the previous post has been removed entirely now, having suffered severe damage in past snow storm events. With some new caves and rock work, some training platforms will be constructed as well as a guest board walk between the leopard and cheetah exhibits for better viewing of the zoo's cats.

FYI: Rum Creek facility is in Florida and is financed completely privately and is wholly privately owned by an unnamed - and who wishes to remain so - individual. I gather the transfer here is a late change, but is convenient for more than one reason. No further comment.

Now holding onto another big game ranch somewhere in Texas, but that is beside the point.

White Oak for all intense purposes is a non profit foundation and a 501c3 ownership style if I am not mistaken.

I can not comment on the ownership style, however I do know White Oak participates in multiple SSP's not only in the US but with zoos all over the world. And one thing they are known for, is their large and successful rhino breeding program. I suggested this location based on the zoo mentioning his transfer for breeding opportunities and a discussion I had with several friends in the profession a couple days ago when we were first informed of the news.

I'm not sure why you say Rum Creek is owned by an unnamed individual. I agree that a lot of information about it is frustratingly difficult to find, but it has been reported, for instance here: Where the bongos and bantengs roam, that tobacco magnate Brad Kelly is the owner of the facility.

Rum Creek also participates in the SSP and for a good time now has been an active member in terms of animals coming in and out. Also, they have been the largest white rhino breeding herd(s) holder inside the US (and quite the bigger then even White Oak - which is not to say or diminish Yulee's/White Oak commitment or share in managing the most productive rhino herds in US larger animal preserves -).

What I meant by an unnamed private individual is that BK does like to keep a low profile. He is certainly much unlike people like Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk and appreciates being outside the limelight. I kind of like it that way too.....
