Has she ever come out of that building, it’d be amazing to see her on the grounds, or Instagram pictures…
Not to my knowledge. I think it’s only recently that they have had any luck with training, a bit of a breakthrough. Civets being one of the more susceptible taxa to COVID doesn’t help either

A few updates from the zoo
African Journey
- A white stork is now living with the kudu and Addra gazelle. This is a different stork than the one who currently lives behind the large sitatunga exhibit. The saddle billed storks are still signed but they were not in any of their three typical exhibits.
- Beau, the new male sitatunga, has been introduced to two of the female sitatunga. They tend to sprint away from him, but he seems very interested in them.
- There is currently construction taking place in the Giraffe barn, and while the two remaining girls were outside I haven’t seen Caesar on any of my last three visits.
- There were only two Colobus boys on exhibit, Bisi should be about 29 or 30 years old so it would not be surprising if he had passed away. It’s also possible that Gonzo or Dexter were transferred for breeding.

Maryland Wilderness
- The cave exhibit is open again after a long construction period, many of the exhibits are still very similar on the outside to before the renovation.
- The last of the three older sheep ladies appears to have died, with a pair of goats now inhabiting the exhibit next to Daphne and Delilah.
- The Trumpeter swans have a new nest (or maybe just a pile of weeds) across from the viewing deck.

Northern Passage
- The old eagle exhibit (first raven, then eagle, now empty) has been deconstructed in preparation for the North American Porcupine exhibit.
- The grizzlies are still hibernating, so the only animal on exhibit is Vega currently.
Why is Caesar rotating with the girls? Giraffes are meant to be social animals

And I wasn’t aware of the older sheep ladies next to Daphne and Delilah, and the reason a pair of goats is in there is because one of the goats is recovering from allergies and the other one is his friend. What breed of sheep were they and how old were the three ladies when they died?

He and Kesi reside together for breeding but the only other giraffe is his 5 year old daughter so they can not be kept together. Thank you for the goat info. All five ewes were Cotswold sheep, and as far as ages go I’m not certain since no statement was released sadly but I was told by a volunteer that the final of the golden girls was around 13. Volunteers have been wrong though.

So you mean ‘’golden girls’’ meaning all three were older than Daphne and Delilah? And how old are Daphne and Delilah? They were still there on my visit in April.

Yes, Daphne and Delilah are only about a year old. The three previous sheep had been there for years as far as I can remember. A number of animals in the farmyard are getting up there in years: the aplacas, the donkeys, the rabbits, a number of goats, and the recently departed Guinea fowl. The pigs, sheep, and the yearly dose of swan cygnets are the only animals I expect to see still in 5 years time.

I wasn’t aware the donkeys and alpacas were old. I actually never heard anything about their age. Donkeys are not a surprise though, they’ve been around forever. I’d hate to see them go, the donkeys are my favorite animals in the Farmyard and both donkeys have been long time residents. But they could still live longer than 5 years since they are fairly long-lived, depending on how old they are now. How old are the donkeys and alpacas? And the goats have a wide range of ages, there’s no definite’’majority age’’ but the oldest ones are like 12 or 13

Where are the rabbits? I didn’t find them. And you mean guineafowl departed meaning they died from old age or left to another zoo? And when did they die or leave?

The aplacas’ ages range but a keeper said that the female who died was in her late 20’s (28?). The rabbits are in the former barn owl exhibit, it’s just hot or miss whether you have access to them or not. The remaining 2 Guinea fowl moved to the African aviary last year but I know neither their ages nor how many remain.

What happened to the barn owls? And 28 is really old for an alpaca, the record is 29. When I went there were only three alpacas.

How many guinea fowl were there to begin with?

Heading to the zoo in June for a trip. Does anyone have any updates requests/Things to look for? This is my first time going (very excited).

It's a pretty intuitive zoo -I don't have many tips, but the one I do have is the indoor chimpanzee habitat gets very crowded, but it's empty when the zoo first opens. Highly recommend going there first thing! (assuming you get there when it opens). I even had one of the little ones play with me at the window once

It’s too bad you can’t postpone your visit until HPAI clears up. The zoo is best known for its penguins (both for the quality of the exhibit and for the size and breeding success of its flock). You’ll be able to see the exhibit, but unless a mallard or gull happens to fly in, not any birds
