Meanwhile in China...

Sigh, everyday I lose a little bit more hope for humanity.

People like Ostrich Vampire Jerk get a lot more media attention than do the people out saving ostriches and doing other things to make the world a better place. I think that there is a much higher ratio of improvers than jerks in the human population.

Don't give up hope.

Did you guys read the rest of the article where they mentioned the crocs dying because of people throwing rocks at them and garbage into their pool? Or throwing snow at the lions? The normal, accepted behaviour of zoo visitors at some zoos in China is far more telling about China's attitude to animals than one crazy dude killing an ostrich, which could have happened in any country.

But if we are to face reality, negative news is bound to get a lot more attention than positive news because it riles people up, so that's why I think that OVJ is getting more attention than Mr. Nice Ostrich Helper.
Rest assured, I do still have hope, as I see intelligent people in many places, but those stupid people that I see occasionally get me irritated.

I always think that if there's 4,5 billion people in the world, there's bound to be at least a handfull of idiots out there...

I always find it remarkable that the deeds of one person can make it into the news, all the way over here. I always feel it might mean there not that many idiots about...

jwer, are you a time traveller from 1980? :D There are more than 7 billion people on this earth right now.

Idiocy is not endemic to China, as it is indeed a global phenomenon.

There's also the fact that they throw coins at turtles for good luck. The worst part is the zoo then ties ribbons around the turtles necks to keep them from retracting into their shells! People make me so angry

@BZF- You're talking to some of those intelligent people right now!:) I see hope in the form of the Przewalski's Wild Horse, Red Wolf, and the modern zoo. I believe that every day people are beginning to open their eyes just a little more- however so slowly. The idiots we've been hearing about in China recently just haven't been opening as fast.

Disregard for humans and for animals often come as a pair, as can sadly be watched in the never ending story around the director of Berlin Zoo and Tierpark these days.
Because of the Chinese history, their behaviour may be understandable to a point.
Recently I have come across more than one article about Chinese animal activists. Reason for hope?

I remember another one of your quotes you posted before; "There is no end to the amount of idiots this planet can accomodate.":D

Here's a celebration of what humans might be capable of if the jerks don't win -

This also gives me pause to think, we Americans had the great Carl Sagan as our voice of science, while our friends in the UK have David Attenborough. I wonder how this speaks to our cultural differences.

yeah, that one was mine. I thought I'd provide a quote from someone with credibility.

Another favourite (I don't know who said it originally) is:

The sum IQ of the planet Earth is a constant - the population is increasing.

:p
