Melbourne Zoo Melbourne 2013 news

In relation to this, the male lions at Perth Zoo are called Nelson and Mandela.

Well, obviously I think that's inappropriate, but I guess it's unsurprising.

I should be clear that I wasn't implying anybody here is consciously being racist or meaning anything but respect for Mandela. But I don't think naming animals after him is the right tribute. It's Mandela's humanity that we are trying to remember and celebrate.

True. And from what I read (or didn't read in this case), he wasn't too vocal or passionate about wildlife conservation. It might be better to name a building after him then, and name marine animal babies after Paul Walker (who was indeed a marine biologist and conservationist).

Melbourne Zoo's newest elephant calf made his public debut today, according to the Zoo's Facebook page:

Our Keepers have just advised that our new baby elephant will be on display to the public for the first time at approximately 11:30am today. Please note that viewing times may be subject to change or cancellation, due to our need to allow the new baby rest whenever needed. We expect there will be significant visitor interest and that viewing times will be brief, so will keep you updated as further opportunities arise during coming weeks.
