Melbourne Zoo melbourne visit - mostly wild sea review

so i hit melbourne today. been a good year or so.

okay so i said i'd hate wild sea. and certainly i really did hate a lot of stuff about it. but first i'll tell you what i liked.

the plantings and surrounding gardens are quite nice. they have succeeded in making it feel a bit beachy. the low wire fencing means you can get ridiculously close to the animals - its quite an improved experience. also the wave pool and natural sand beaches for the seals was something i was really hoping for. so its come good with those aspects. the prevalent use of wood works well to compliment the beach vibe. the estuary is tiny, but looks good. the diddler ray pool certainly got a lot of attention. its a nice addition. but really - this exhibit epitomises all we complain about with new zoo exhibits. the old exhibit was bulldozed a millions were wasted on new interps and other extras - and ultimately the animals ended up with a superior but still teeny exhibit.

on that point let me explain what is the biggest addition, both space wise and cost - to wild sea - it is essentially an underground discotheque.

it features a huge indoor revolting disco with giant screens of CG whales and dolphins, coloured light projections of fish that are reminiscent of a disco ball effect - oversized illuminated models of sea weed and a big open space with balconies and various levels that are completely empty of people. why is it empty? becuse thats all it is. space and nobody came to the zoo to watch tv. instead the fraction of the space that is used is all crowded around one of the 3 rather modest sized windows that look into the seal exhibit. but overall the central hub of wild sea has the vibe of a nightclub on a cruise liner at 7pm - its dead. dead space.

of course all the smaller marine tanks are empty. not that anyone cares about small tanks at kids height with plastic seaweed anyway. ten bucks says they remove them before they ever even get inhabitants.

the actual interior of the seal exhibit is ugly. its smooth concrete. its very narrow. the rear wall of the pool is often just a couple of meters from the glass. its REALLY badly painted. you can see the paint roller marks everywhere. obviously it was rushed.

the next underwater viewing station is the penguin exhibit. its a smooth concrete wall, a rushed painted blue again. with odd square windows shelves and ledges. i don't know what i'm looking at? an underwater piece of modernist art? people were confused. we kept walking.

leaving the disco i got to see how small the seal pool really is. the rocks look dumb. the seals were nice and close though. but the coloured glass
facade of the building, is already starting to fall off the building!

the penguin pool is no better from above. you've seen the photos. its atrocious. as you walk around the next side of the penguin exhibit you see the dunes for them to nest in. it looks nice. it makes you realise how good wild sea can be - once it gets a multi million dollar facelift.

what a waste of money.

overall though - the zoo is looking pretty good. those of you that have complained about the "old side" of the zoo should feel different about in now. wild sea is smack bang in the middle of this area and so the older part of the zoo is looking fresh with lots of new gardens etc. small cat alley and the food court has a new lease on life. and virtually all the older exhibits in the zoo have now had a facelift. new handrails, gardens and and exhibit furnishings have done wonders for the big cat and bear exhibits.

the african rainforest and primate boardwalk looks better than ever. its still the best immersion exhibit i've ever seen. all because its understated and full of plants.

oh yeah i saw a baby elephant.

Thanks for the review Phoenix, I feel disappointed about this exhibit just by reading your post, lol. Any comments about any other parts of the zoo?.

Now was that deliberate?:D

Thank you for the review. I appreciate your take on it especially with reagrds to your background in design etc. It sounds disapointing in many aspects, especially after all that time and money. I wonder how I will feel about it when I see it.

With Ara's somewhat disappointing visit to Taronga zoo last week and your visit to Melbourne zoo today it would make one wonder IF there is some sort of common problem with the design program in our two largest zoos, "Maybe" it could be not enough input by the zoo staff in house?, any ideas here?.

i have decided that interps are MASSIVELY overrated. i don't think they are very effective in delivering a message. and people don't go to the zoo to watch tv. in fact having televisions at the zoo goes against the the principles we use to justify their existence - we say people go to the zoo to see something they don't get watching documentaries on a sunday night. and its true. i watched visitor after visitor walk through that space in wild seas - and make a beeline straight for the exit after standing at the windows looking at the seals.

but a keeper only has to mumble a few words and suddenly they are surrounded by attentive people. THATS how you deliver a message.

interps are a massive waste of money. better spend it on bigger exhibits and an extra keeper and or higher wages for their staff.

but thats just part of it. the other issue is upkeep. zoos routinely fail to upkeep interps. because they inevitably break down, need maintenance or total replacement. in addition people become bored of them. and just to prove it, it was interesting to note the following...

today was a premium visitor day at melbourne. being a sunday (with a public holiday tomorrow and a new baby elephant in house. but the donation station at the end of trail of the elephants was shut. not that i have ever seen anyone really use it. its a bunch of touch screens that don't really deliver much information and the zoo conveniently placed a detour path right next to it. my guess is the touch screen broke down long ago.

likewise the puzzle interp at the orang house was not stocked with the tools required for visitors to use it. in fact of all my visits since the orang sanctuary opened - i have only ever ONCE seen the basket stocked with wooden sticks (which are needed to operate the puzzle). this interp takes up two premium glass viewing windows into the exhibit.

the elephant research station originally had a turtle crisis interactive on a computer for visitors to use. this would have cost thousand of dollars to have developed. it was gone by my second visit to the elephant exhibit.

or the tv that played a custom made documentary in the "community hall" at the elephant village. its been switched off for years.

nup. interps just don't work. both literally and at delivering a message.

i don't think the staff who look after the animals are necessarily qualified to make decisions about exhibit esthetics, or public expectations. they do have valuable input to offer in terms of the design of the features relative to management, enrichment and containment.

i think the problem is the current trend of zoo design, zoo management not understanding their own core business and just plain bad design.

also -

since you mentioned taronga i have to say - seriously, melbourne zoo kicks its arse! it has a completely different vibe. melbourne is still leisurely. and thats what a zoo should be. melbourne on a warm muggy day like today is just a quiet leisurely stroll through a rainforest. the paths are largely all coarse sand. the tropical plants tower above your head. the exhibits have room to breathe amongst the gardens. and the exhibits are overall more naturalistic and nicely understated.

and if thats not enough for you, just go for the way better collection!

!

I find this an interesting quote. Are you referring primarily to govt. run zoos or private zoos as well?
I work for a govt. organisation and I am constantly frustrated by having to participate in the managements ability to spend tens of thousands of tax payers money (including mine) on wasted projects that we, the staff on the ground, could have told them was wrong or would not work.

One major concern that I have had for ages, and have not been able to express properly, is the way govt. run zoos in Australia are spending huge amounts of money on unnessary bling in the major exhibits being built now.
The examples that you have given Phoenix are all excellent examples.

In my mind the best exhibits at Melbourne is the Africab rainforest trail, through Primate walk then past the otters, tigers and into the elephants. And the great bird aviary
At Taronga I think the best is Wollomi Pines. All these places are naturalistic, are not flashy and though I don't know for sure, probably weren't as expensive as any of the other new ones.

Even then Wollomi Pines was a let down the last time I visited as the zoo appears to have let it run down and the animal life seemed to have dwindled in numbers and species.

yeah i agree. my favorite exhibit at taronga was the woollemi exhibit - but last time i visited it wasn't looking too flash. the gardens had deteriorated.

i thought it was pretty funny to see that the coloured glass shards on melbournes wild sea had already started to fall off!

sort of going off-topic, but what happened about Melbourne's massive storm I saw on the tv news?! Hailstones the size of golf-balls, rivers of ice flowing down the city streets...! I would've thought that would make a day at the zoo not that great.

the hailstorm was on saturday, and whilst the weather forecast something similar for sunday it never really eventuated in melbourne. in any event both days were actually quite hot, and the saturday storm was a typical summer thunderstorm - which made the fact that it was hailing all the weirder!

rain in the morning on sunday meant few people went to the zoo - but it turned out to be a real shorts and t-shirt kinda day. which was great for everyone who pushed ahead with their plans and went anyway.

When I was there a couple of weeks ago they had cleared out much of the undergrowth making it look a lot 'cleaner'. They had also introduced a pair of Glossy Cockatoos, and several Regent Honeyeaters.

I went today but i have a different view on the zoo and what i like:

First off the trail of the elephants i lined up for 40 minutes and saw mali for 5 so i had a long time to notice everything along the trail, and i noticed the zoo really has put all it's effort in it's little money maker, there are banners, signs everywhere shes already the face of animal adoption at the zoo. The aviaries along the way really need a few more birds they are looking very empty, ramalon? the tiger was completely inactive as usual but the orangs were great they are probably my favourite animals at the zoo also how many siamangs do MZ have now?

Next Wild Sea:

first thought was that the estuary is way to small and two pelicans and a lonely gannet :( don't bring that much interest to the area. the ray pool is very good but confusing as to whether it is a touch pool or not. next the box as i would call it is just an empty waste there is a giant seaweed thing in it and thats it, the underwater seal area is very tight and boring i personal don't mind the fake rocks but the blue is just horrible why couldn't it have been shaped like rocks and grey or something that even slighty looks natural, but even so the seals seem to love it they glide up and down and the waves are great. the small tanks on the walkway are still empty :( and the underwater penguin area is very confusing i pointed at the surface of the water because you can't see the penguins but you can see there reflections! but i don't mind the seal and penguin areas above ground i think they look nice even if small although the seal shows if they happen (which i'm 99%) sure they will won't be very easy to follow and most of the show would be seals jumped off the rocks and thats about it.

the rest of the zoo is looking very good the african rainforest is looking good the plants have grown tons but i want to know are the gorillas allowed in any trees at all? monifa was asleep and hasn't grown that much to my surprize. The mandrills are the same and the tree top walk has grown alot to but i would really like to see a new monkey species in there.

the rest of the zoo is the same a fare few cages are empty for fixing up and some have already had this done so the zoo just keeps getting better and better.

i will try and answer any questions if you have any but i have alot of my own:

how many otters, bongo and snow leopard does MZ have now?
what are the zoos plans as to getting some more birds, and small mammals like coatis, monkeys and mandrills and does the zoo plan to get rid of any exhibits/what are the plans for the ape grottos, babbon area (when they leave), other hippo pond and bongos?

and also i have a few thing about the interps: alot of the trail of the elephant ones were on and not being used they are a waste but i do think that some a good i like the orang game one (having been beaten by an orang on it once) and i really like the little hide thing over the gorillas it only has a family history board and one or two other little things but people really use them there simple and easy to understand and don't take long to read/use, people who come to the zoo don't have time to play games or watch docos but if they made some things simple or even hired some actors :p for some areas like the trail of the elephant it could work better!

Well I visited the Zoo tooday and the Wild Sea exhibit was closed due to a faulty fire alarm. Did not see a damn thing except for the tank with just seaweed in it. Not at all happy.
