Melbourne Zoo Melbourne Zoo gets Lucky

Australia finally making some sort of an effort to maintain the species down under? Are there people reading this forum?

So this is why the pygmy hippo enclosure was getting renovated on my visit.......I suspected that Kambiri (Taronga) would be moving to Melbourne, but she is still too young. In a few years I would imagine Kambiri will join him, and Melbourne have a breeding on their hands.

BTW, as soon as I saw the title of this thread I thought one of the gorillas were pregnant :D!

Is it just me, but why wouldnt you send other hippos to somewhere than actually had bred them? not to a zoo that hasn't?
Just a thought.

Maybe they will bring Kambiri (born last year) eventually to Melbourne to be paired up with this male, but I can understand your point.

Thats what I had thought. Adelaide has bred a few over the years, including the breeding female at Taronga (sorry, name escapes me), so why not send them there?

Melbourne has bred them successfully in the past. Maybe this transfer was organised when Monifa was still alive

The female you are talking about is called Petra.

I really wish this had been the animal to have moved, so we could have had the title be 'Melbourne Zoo gets Stoned'.

;)
