Melbourne Zoo Melbournes eles heading for Werribee?

yes, melbourne zoo with its established gardens and controlled site lines is better suited to building exhibits for, and interpreting forest eco-systems

As the giraffe/zebra encoclosure at Melbourne is, to put it mildly, bland, they would be a much better exhibit at Werribee where it is quite exciting to see them. There is a rumour, that I was told, that Werribee was to start a breeding herd of giraffe there so maybe....

An extended elephant exhibit would be a much better use of the giraffe space.

They would benefit great from the exhibit, plus I'm sure that visitors would love to see a herd of giraffes perhaps with some calves, is there any article released about it, or just a hear-say rumour.. :)

oh, ok, well it isn't totally not gonna happen, it's best for both species in my opinion.

I agree with moving the zebras and giraffes to werribee and maybe putting an Asian Grasslands exhibit there e.g. Blackbuck, Sika Deer ect.

And on a side note Werribee has opened a new wild dog exhibit today.

I don't know where they came from but nine are on exhibit. It seems strange that nine wild dogs can move zoos without anyone realising, especially in Australia.
The only thing that I can think of is that they were already at Werribee but off exhibit. I now that there are quite a few off exhibit species.

Thanks Pat,

yeah seems unlikely that a pack of 9 wild dogs just pop out of no where and in Australia! ;)

They came from monarto recentley.

did it open today. see, i was corrected for saying that it was going to open and was told it wasnt for some time.
Pat, i dont think sika deer are obtainable in australia; your looking at sambar as an option, and id be far more in favour of devoting this singificant area of land to elephants over an enclosure for deer.

QUOTE]

As you pointed out Gly its all on the web site. Wednesday week ago. They only had half the fence up and no shelters erected in the off exhibit area.

There are already 2 Bongo at Melbourne Zoo. 1 at a time on display at present. As mentioned earlier they are looking to move the bachelor group of gorillas from MZ to Werribee, and expand on the African theme. I've been told the Ele move is definitely not happening.

forgot to post it but yeah went to the zoo last week keeper says that they haven't been told anything about this move.

*BUMP* As far as I'm aware..........

Some gorillas will be moved into Werribee first.. and there ARE plans for Elephants. Just no year set. Previously it was always toyed with but never confirmed.

gorilla will be interesting at werribee, Melbourne does have two silverbacks wonder how it'll work or of course the gorilla will come from somewhere else.

elephants I'm sure will be sent to werribee because of romm needed to house the calves being born. Since A.I mainly produces males maybe a bachelor herd? although bulls even young ones on open display would be somewhat dangerous. Unless there is an exhibit made like the hippo's one.

zoos victoria will eventually have no option but to move its elephant herd to werribee.
as their melbourne exhibit is totally inadequate to manage a stable herd long term.

gorillas are a major melbourne attraction and whilst african hardly fit in with werribee's grasslands theme. moving motaba and his sons there is a poor long-term since zoos victoria needs to be cementing the differences between the 3 parks not blurring the lines.

since zoos vic no longer house chimps they are better off building a new exhibit for chimp at werribee, then using that exhibit to temporarily house the two gorilla groups whilst they refurbish the old ape house and demolish and replace the grottoes with
a modern exhibit that is suitable for a second group.

once the gorillas return to melbourne werribee can acquire chimpanzee and secure a separate attraction from its sister zoo and victoria can contribute to the regional program for chimpanzee.

likewise keeping the baboons at melbourne is a short-sighted move. baboon are really best appreciated when seen as a large colony and this is best achieved in an open range environment. they also thematically fit with werribee's vision but not that of melbourne who also hold mandrill in a modern immersion exhibit.

hummm. The elephants I'd dare say could quite easily be separated. The new Savannah being built, for example, is separate from the lower.. So that wouldn't be a problem. Now, I do believe there was something going on with chips and gorillas re: melbourne zoo! Without going into details, I believe gorillas come to werribee, to gorilla mountain.. (or was that baboon mountian?) whilst melbourne gets chimps.. Also, werribee to get baboons because, well, they're not that well off at Melbourne!

Plans where slowly taking werribee zoo out of the 'Africa only area' BUT, due to changes within the zoo, this may not end up happening.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned somewhere  How big is the proposed Werribee ele paddock? Just curious :)

sorry i'm not sure i follow you. what "new savannah" are you talking about and what does that have to do with melbourne's asian elephants?

please do go into details. re you saying you've heard melbourne will be moving ALL their gorillas to werribee in exchange for chimps displayed at melbourne?

this seems highly unlikely to me.

shame. having victorias zoo with the most potential biased towards animals from one continent is rather foolish. considering it instantly slashes out so many opportunities.
