i know, these arguments are getting very long in the tooth, or trunk, lol.
no doubt a baby elephant would lead to a surge in zoo revenue which taronga could capitalise on better than dubbo, but in terms of covering day to day expenses taronga is in a better position to afford maintaining a larger herd of elephants.
and in terms of longeivity, elephants have lived quite long (though clearly up until recently quite impoverished) lives in sydney which is interesting when you consider that dubbo, an open-range zoo, has not met with the same success.

and on euthenasia, or however it is spelt, its unfortunate that its the most effective management tool for the animal group we find cutest. no-one objects to management practices like egg pricking etc in birds and reptiles. and hey, if those lord howe-island stic insects at melbourne ever got out of control, controlling them would be easy.

its a thin line to tread. where do you draw the line? this actually desserves a new thread....is it better to abort a gorilla foetus if its determined to be a male, or better to keep an animal like rigo in solitairy confinement for decades as surplus? money that could be spent on in-situ conservation or to cover other zoo costs.

exactly glyn, that is the big opposition, if you get a high profile animal, like gorrilla, rhino or ele, ya doing wrong, but if u do it to sheep cattle, even kangaroos for a captive situation, then u are not facing objection.
people have a relationship to mammals, we are all warm blooded, and the public associate with mammals more so than any other genre. thats why its ok to see in zoos live insects being fed to beardies, but never live mice to fennec foxes.
