Memorializing the Wake Island Rail: An Extinction Caused by War

On the other hand, when WW2 broke out and German troops occupied Poland, Polish partisans delegated a troop to protect some of the only European Bison in existence. The species survived, although in diminished numbers: just 15 free ones in Białowieża and 88 more in zoos worldwide.

A very sad story, human ideology causing the extinction of an innocent bird species..
I am afraid it set a precedent for habitat destruction as did the latter day bombings of aggressors Germany and Japan. The wars in f.i. Indochina since have demonstrated how this unconventional warfare with chemical weapons has blighted the wildlands. I do not think we have learned anything from the past, alas.

Still yet a good initiative to come around, if belatedly, to underline the price of wars for our natural world and heritage.

Jurek, that was the second bottleneck after WW1 and 1919 - first attempt - at creating an ex situ breeding program. It has - admittedly - taken good on a century to get back to European wisent numbers back up to 5,000 individuals globally.
