Highland Wildlife Park Mercedes

I think it was saturday or sunday she moved, anybody know any more? how is she setteling n? anybody got any good pictures of her house and exhibit?

their website states that the last chance to see mercedes was on sunday. So she probably moved on monday or if not she may move this week sometime.

She was supposed to be on show Sunday the 18th and then kept off display until her move North.

She wqs still there on saturday and sunday. Website said last day to see her would be 18th and it was in local papers.

Very happy to tell you that she has arrived at HWP safe and well. She left Edinburgh zoo first thing monday morning. The enclosure will now be prepared for her replacement (or replacements)

I have to say though, that i am not so keen on the new enclosure's pool, as it is not a concrete basin, but a huge muddy puddle. This means that i cannot be drained and cleaned as her moat is at the zoo.

I agree with you Joeking the pool looks to be a huge letdown for this showpiece enclosure, but as it is on the side of the enclosure next to the drive through, i'm sure it wasn't a priority.
Hopefully in time maybe, if visitor numbers increase, Mercedes eventually dies, and maybe a potential breeding pair or group of polar bears are brought in, the pool may get looked at.

Really, where did you hear that? That would be amazing. I just assumed it would be used for one of the big cat species, allowing the rest to spread out over the 'carnivore row'

from the Edinburgh Zoo Blog:

"We can report that Mercedes, the polar bear, has now moved up to her new Highland home at the Wildlife Park in Kingussie. Her move went very smoothly, and she had already begun to settle into her new enclosure by lunch time on Monday. Visitors to the park have already reported ‘glimsping’ her in her off-show housing area. However, we would not advise visiting the park specially to see her just yet as she will not be clearly visible for some time. She will be given plenty of time to acclimatise to her new surroundings gradually and we will let you know as soon as she is ready to greet her admiring public!"

Mercedes new home

Just got back from visit to Edinburgh, taking in HWP as well.
I have to say that I'm not very impressed with the state of Mercedes new home. It's wonderful that she's got all that space to wander around in, but the pool is almost an afterthought. Would it not have been better to dig out a larger pool, concrete it, to allow easy cleaning, and put a little shoreline of pebbles, instead of leaving it a marsh! With help from the Army, surely this could have been achievable?
Also, the off-show accommodation seems to leave a lot to be desired. If they do plan to bring in other bears in later years, where are the cubbing dens? As it stands, it doesn't seem very substantial.
Also, she is supposed to be off-show at HWP for 2-3 weeks, as I understand it, for her to settle in. Where ? Surely they aren't going to confine her to the housing in her enclosure? For 2-3 weeks ? She would get stressed rather than settle in. Are they still going to be working on the exhibit while she is off-show ? If so, why move her so soon?
When you see what they did with the new Tiger exhibit, Mercedes new home seems a bit of a wasted opportunity.

That is a shame about her pool. Used to see her playing in her pool at Edinburgh a lot and I know that she used to take her food in there as well sometimes. A lovely deep pool that can be cleaned out should have been built.

According to BBC news this morning Mercedes the polar bear is being let out into her main enclosure for the first time today.
