Mesker Park Zoo announces expansion to the Asian Carnivore area

Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden announced a new expansion of one of their exhibits.

The zoo is installing a tiger bridge in their Asian Carnivore area. This project will connect two existing exhibits and will allow the tigers to have additional roaming room.

When the cats aren’t using the bridge, the zoo says their Malayan sun bear could use it.

The project will be finished by the end of this week.

Will the zoo get a new potential mate for Rupert? Also, someone uploaded this really nice walkthrough video of the zoo and I had no idea of how nice the Indian Rhino exhibit is. It has both outdoor and indoor viewing. The rhino part starts at 23:30. I like all the bamboo that forms a barrier around it with multiple levels to view him from the boardwalk.

A three-year-old male Baird's Tapir has arrived from Palm Beach: Mesker Park Zoo welcomes new Tapir
He is a replacement for Huey (born at Miami MZ in 1994) who died at 26 - the oldest Baird's tapir in North America at the time - in early January last year. Not sure if he is to be paired at all at some point.

Greater one-horned rhino Rupert with female Mechi did not have a breeding recommedation. I was under the impression the SSP just laid out its newest plans earlier this year (before Mechi had passed away). He was born at OKC and from the old LA Zoo mixed with NY Bronx/Toronto MZ bloodline and both are genetically valuable individuals (Chandra was the only offspring from the pair HermanxRadha at LA Zoo). What happens next is anybody's guess, but Rupert is fairly young at 6, so an in-betweener at juvenile/sub-adulthood for his species (think 9-10 years before he is a breeding male, if at all).

I guess they'll wait until Rupert becomes of breeding age to bring in a female for him. Pretty cool that he comes from a unique bloodline.

That is not set in stone. It may a totally different ball game in 3-4 years time frame.
Obviously given the age difference when Rupert came up to Mesker he was never recommended to start breeding with Mechi (repro senescence / excluded).

Mesker could be a holding space for males until they get old enough to breed and pair with a female like how DC does with their Grevy's Zebras. It'd be cool if they moved the Barasingha over to Rupert's exhibit to make a mixed species enclosure. They would do well and there is enough space for them to all co-exist together.

On April 28th, the zoo announced that due to avian influenza, their raptors, cranes, penguins, ostriches, and emus have been moved off-exhibit, and they have closed the budgie feeding area, as well as the free-flight aviary in the Amazonia building. the Jaguar exhibit and the aquarium will still be accessible to the public.
