Metro Richmond or Virginia Zoo

I am returning home from the Outer Banks in a few days and will pass though the area of both zoos. Any insights on which is a better investment of my time?

If you visit Virginia Zoo just make sure to check the website and see if everything is open. A lot of construction was happening when I visited in April and most of Asia and parts of the reptile house were closed.

Virginia has a surprisingly great reptile house and I was impressed with Okavango Delta. The tiny North America and Australia sections look like they've been left to rot though.

Never been to Metro Richmond and not sure of the quality there, but they do seem to be the bigger of the two and also have much more rarities, at least in terms of mammals.

I’d recommend Virginia Zoo. Was not real impressed with Metro Richmond Zoo.

Virginia Zoo is a nice solid zoo, but off the top of my head their only real rarity (at least as far mammals go) is the Asiatic black bear, but that’s still an increasingly rare species.

I haven’t been to Metro Richmond personally but despite having a much wider array of rarities, I’ve definitely seen and heard a lot of negative things about their exhibitry. Lots of very poor enclosures for their primates and cats in particular, if I remember correctly, so if that’s a deal breaker it’s certainly worth noting.

I'm leaving toward Virginia Zoo the Asia and reptile exhibits are open. The Metro Richmond map on the site seems cut off and incomplete.

What part seems cut off or incomplete? Other than the train part of the map it looks pretty standard to me:
