Miami Seaquarium Miami Seaquarium

The issue of permits came up in the last few years. MSQ does not own the property and if they are told “no” there’s not much to be said. Early in 2001 MSQ had been given the “ok” but the tourism industry was crippled a few months later on September 11th.

Thank you for at least mentioning Tokitae by her real name. It always amuses me how people are crying to Free Lolita but never call her by her rightful name or even know what it is.

I have a friend who used to work at MSQ and there was talk back in the early 2000s about building her a larger pool, but the powers that be decided to spend the money on a new dolphin swim area and claimed it would have been too stressful to move Toki.

The dolphin swim facility came 7 years after the approved permits for a new pool. They are unrelated. September 11, 2001 is the sole reason the new pool never happened

Can anyone confirm the number of Pacific White Sided dolphins this facility currently has? I believe there was a calf born last year (not sure if to Li'i or Catalina) and curious if any calf born this year? From what I can tell they would have 2.2 or possibly 2.2.1.

What is 2.2.1? Is the 1 a new birth that for some reason hasn't been sexed yet? I had to stop for a second and wonder if we're recognizing fluidity of sexual identity in animals.

Not yet that I am aware of!

Typically, animals in collections are noted as the following:
males.females.unknown

So in this case, 2.2.1, would indicate two males, two females, and 1 unknown. Although in this example, I do not know if there is a fifth animal in the collection at this time.

Hope that helps! :)

Miami Seaquarium to be sold to Mexico marine theme park company
The Dolphin Company, a Mexico-based theme park operator, is buying the Virginia Key marine park from California-based Palace Entertainment, a subsidiary of Spanish theme park operator Parques Reunidos, for an undisclosed amount.

The company doesn’t have any major changes planned for the park, a spokesperson said. That includes continuing to use Lolita the killer whale, the park’s star attraction, in shows.

The sale of the Seaquarium is expected to be finalized by the end of the year.

Catalina, a Pacific white-sided dolphin, has died. Her death was possibly caused by aggression Toki (Lolita), according to a Miami Herald article, but that hasn't been confirmed. SeaWorld took her back December 3rd to try and care for her, but she passed away sometime between the 4th and 9th.

Regarding the sale of the aquarium, “County commissioners approved in October the transfer of the Seaquarium’s lease to Cancun-based The Dolphin Company under an agreement to ensure investment in infrastructure and better care for marine animals at the park that has operated on county-owned land on Virginia Key since its opening in 1954. Miami-Dade receives about $2.5 million a year in rent from the park.

Commissioners voted to allow Festival Fun Parks, a subsidiary of Madrid-based Parques Reunidos, also known as Palace Entertainment, to sell the lease it has held since 2014 to the Mexican operator. But the deal can only be finalized after the Seaquarium addresses the critical violations that emerged from the USDA’s inspection in June and any enforcement actions that may emerge from the current investigation, Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department said.

‘The transaction can’t take place until all the USDA citations have been addressed. That’s a condition required by the Mayor and the Board for approval and execution of the lease transaction,” the county said. “The Dolphin Company understands and concurs with this requirement, and accordingly won’t take over operations at the Seaquarium until the improvements are completed by the current operator.’”

Toki will no longer be performing shows and her exhibit will no longer be accessible to park guests. This move coincides with USDA approval for The Dolphin Company to begin managing the park per the sale by Palace Entertainment.

Shows are over for Seaquarium’s killer whale Lolita, new managers say. 50-year era ends

There is very little clarity on if this is a condition of USDA license being granted or if new management made this decision on their own. The article bounces back and forth numerous times in the first few paragraphs.

I think it's time to send her to Seaworld Orlando where she can finally be integrated with other individuals of her kind.

Yeah, I can't imagine they will keep her if they are not going to exhibit or show her. SW Orlando seems like it would be the easiest location to transfer her to.

People are going to freak out if she moves to SWO as all the media outlets are saying something along the lines of "LOLITA TO BE RELEASED"

It is quite frustrating when folks demand this elderly orca be transfered to an unbuilt, unfunded, sea side sanctuary 3,500 miles away when obviously her best option for her wellbeing is Sea World. I hope she doesn't languish behind the scenes for long when the best option is just up the interstate in Orlando.
