A female black bear has arrived:

Mill Mountain Zoo in Roanoke welcomes American Black Bear

Hyde is a 10-year-old female black bear, weighing 350 pounds. She was born in captivity.

Hyde lived at the Wright Park Zoo from the age of three months old until her move to Roanoke. After spending the required 30 days in quarantine per Mill Mountain Zoo’s policy and procedures, the zoo is excited to introduce Hyde to the region.

Also on October 16th, the zoo announced they remodeled the Reptile House and acquired a (0.1) Argentine black-and-white tegu named Alma which is now open to the public.

On June 17th, the zoo announced they acquired a (1m.0) Linne's two-toed sloth? (later named Monte), which is an ambassador animal**.

On June 26th, the zoo announced they (alongside an eagle scout) installed a new leaning structure inside the American black bear exhibit.

On July 8th, the zoo announced they acquired (1m.1f) North American porcupines named Sam and Sophia, which are on exhibit. The zoo also announced that a North American porcupine was born on May 13th, and is also on exhibit.

* Worth mentioning that a red-necked wallaby was born in early 2024, and the zoo acquired a (1m.0) Virginia opossum (later named Opie) in October 2024. It's also worth mentioning that the zoo demolished the (former) snow leopard viewing deck in November 2024, and they officially named their wood turtle Eileen, their eastern ratsnake Onyx, and their corn snake Cornelius in August 2024.
** The zoo says it's a Hoffmann's two-toed sloth, so either they have it misidentified or it is a hybrid animal.
