An update has been shared regarding the
trio of orphaned black bear cubs taken in by the zoo earlier this year:
"Ce printemps, nous avons pris sous notre aile trois jeunes oursons orphelins. Leur réhabilitation en nature était prévue au printemps, juste après leur première hivernation. Mais suite à un projet pilote du ministère, et contre notre gré, ils ont été relâchés à 5 mois, quelques semaines après leur sevrage. Étant donné leur très jeune âge et leur besoin de tutelle, deux des trois oursons se sont dirigés vers les activités humaines, dépourvues.
Ceci a engendré leur retour au refuge, et condamné leur réelle réhabilitation à l’état sauvage. Ces deux oursonnes vont désormais devenir des résidentes permanentes du sanctuaire."

For those not fluent in French, it boils down to matters pertaining to the cubs' release being taken out of the zoo's hands, and the trio were placed back into the wild prematurely. Subsequently, two of the cubs were found malnourished, close to urban environments/human activity, and thus returned to the zoo where they will remain permanently. Nothing has been shared about the whereabouts or condition of the third cub.
The zoo has been a successful rehabilitation for local wildlife in Quebec for over a decade, and it is incredibly disheartening to see their work interrupted and three bears denied a real chance at life in the wild, all thanks to what looks like government mismanagement.
