Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo news 2014

I was there volunteering today and got a chance to swing by the new red river hog exhibit. Another Zoo Pride member told me that today was the very first day that they were out on exhibit, however, much like the new caracal, they were not seen at all, with the exception of when one just poked his head out the door and went back in. I'll be there tomorrow so I'll stop by there again. Hopefully with better luck at seeing them.

That's fantastic to hear! Hopefully you see them tomorrow.

Oh, and one more thing I forgot in my update. According to a new info sign, sandhill cranes have been added to the moose exhibit, but haven't seen them yet.

I DID see the Red River Hogs (Mango and Radish are their names, brothers) and if you catch them when they're out, they're beautiful and perhaps the cutest species of wild boar I've ever seen! They are still wary of loud and sudden noises, but seemed very comfortable and stayed out for about 15 minutes.
I also saw the Sandhill Cranes info sign, but also had no luck finding them. Maybe still getting acclimated to the large exhibit?

Last side note, Camila was outside of her hiding box and laying not too far from the glass! :)

Sossy? What does that mean? How does one pronounce it?

While talking to some volunteers yesterday, apparently they said the name comes from a zoo donor's child's nickname. Until I hear otherwise, I'm going with pronouncing the name as "sauce-e." To be honest, I'm not real crazy about the name.

I'm all that crazy about it either. I would have put money on Atilla after the hun.

The baby harbor seal has been named! His name is King Julian! I may be a bit too happy about this name because i LOVE the Madagascar movies and the lemur King Julian in them (which the pup is named after) but I personally like this name better than the name given to the snow leopard cub, Sossy...
This is the FIRST harbor seal pup EVER BORN at the Milwaukee County Zoo. :)

Sossy the snow leopard cub will make his debut on Saturday! :D

Sadly, however, the article also mentioned that the father, Genghis, was euthanized due to a cancerous tumor in his mouth. :(

R.I.P. Genghis.

Noo!! It was a tumor?? That's so sad! We'll miss you Genghis. :(
Good news about Sossy's legs working correctly though :)
